Cayman Island Newspaper

The url will take you to the Cayman Islands Newspaper. The first post hurricane edition was just printed and is online. Needless to say, the devastation was amazing. To put it in perspective, think of the US real estate affected by this monster storm. Grand Cayman is but a speck compared to the coasts of Florida, Alabama and Mississippi that were affected. One thing to think about is that the US coastline was evacuated because of the storm. In Grand Cayman there was no place to drive to escape, so you have to ride it out. This makes the fact that there has only been one fatality reported so amazing. Also all recovery supplies must be either flown or shipped in.

Thanks so much for the link rfische1! It's really nice to get some accurate information as to just what all HAS happened, and IS happening in GC.

It sounds like they have a good program in place to get things cleaned up, and back on their feet ASAP.

So, again . . . "Thank you"

I think the key here is "Reported". I believe that there have been more fatalities that have not been reported. The government has been very tight lipped about the amount of damage done to the island.

This is a link to a first hand account of the storm: http://help.stormcarib.com

I read a news article recently that said one of the grave yards in Grand Cayman had been hit by huge waves that caused massive flooding. It also said it caused many bodies to be unearthed and were floating down the streets and landing in yards. This could be why some people are reporting seeing bodies and yet the gov't says there is only one fatality. It would make sense of all of the conflicting reports we are hearing.
