La Petit train noumea

Hi I am going to Noumea in December, this will be our only 'shopping port' of call, and am wondering if it is good for duty free alcohol and cigarettes. We are also interested in perfume and other trinkets, so is it better to get these on board on the last day, when they have the sale on, or to get them in Port. I went to Vila in February this year and enjoyed the duty free shopping there, but have heard that Noumea is expensive. Can anyone help. We intend to also go on the train, and will try to get a later ride if possible.
