cruisecrasy Posted May 11, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 11, 2004 Cruising islands in Jan and really wld appreciate hearing about your experiences re: tours, etc. Shld we book ships tours, off the pier when we arrive in port, book by internet or phone in advance or just go it alone and walk or rent a vehicle (if yes whom, how & when?)? Esp interested in the volcanos. Many thanks for taking your valuable time to share your recommendations with me. Happy cruisin' all! Suebee Posted May 11, 2004 #2 Share Posted May 11, 2004 Cruisecrasy, I just bumped my Star review from jan 04. It says what we did on each island. As for the Volcano....we didnt get there because of a medical emergency, but there have been lots of volcano discussions recently. Aloha NCL Star 1/04 What's Next? Suebee Posted May 12, 2004 #5 Share Posted May 12, 2004 cruisecrasy, to BUMP means to take an old post and move it (bump) it to the top of the topics list. We do this so that when someone is looking for an old reference, there it is at or near the top so they can find it without trying to use the bum search option here at Cruise Critic. Hope that is clear. Sue NCL Star 1/04 What's Next? Alaska 2005 - Ask me about an official CC group!

jkrislc Posted May 19, 2004 #10 Share Posted May 19, 2004 SweetEmi, I'll try to answer this one for you. When you are typing your reply in the message box, you'll notice a tool bar. The first icon is a smiley face far inserting things like this The second one, labeled "URL", is where you want to go. When you click on the "URL" button, another box will appear with "URL" and "Title". Cut and paste your internet link into the "URL" box and type any name you want to give the link in the "Title" box. When you click "OK", only the title will appear in your post. Hope that helps and makes sense. jkrislc Posted May 20, 2004 #13 Share Posted May 20, 2004 Great job, SweetEmi. Your the perfect student! Thanks for all your input on these boards (you too, spleen). Although I was born in Hawaii, I haven't been there in a couple of decades, so I'm going in January as a self-imposed graduation gift from graduate school. I've been bookmarking and copy many of your posts! Thanks again! paulfredo Posted May 22, 2004 #14 Share Posted May 22, 2004 We usually recommend doing the tours on your own rather than through the cruise line. Hawaii is easy to navigate, and there are better opportunities to see and do more on your own. We usually book our tours through www.tombarefoot.com and they are helpful and reliable. Their prices are usually discounted, and if not the very lowest, at least they are reliable and you won't get burned. If you want to do something that is going to push the limits on your time, you may want to do a ship tour so that you don't need to worry about missing the departure. While on NCL Star, the only ship tour we did was the Beach Experience at Fanning. It was well worth it. paul
cruiserdad Posted May 28, 2004 #15 Share Posted May 28, 2004 We did the Volcano National Park tour from Hilo 2yrs ago on the NCL Sky. They went to the park and stopped at several different places in the park. It was very fascinating! On the way back we stopped at the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory, ok if you are looking for seasoned nuts that we didn't find in the stores. We are going back again in 2 weeks, can't wait!! cvm4739 Posted May 29, 2004 #16 Share Posted May 29, 2004 Last year we were on the Star. First, book online because the lines for shore excursions on board were extremely long. I've never seen anything like it! We took 2 tours through NCL. One was Haleakala Carter, which was quite exciting, but if you have trouble breathing at heights, skip it. It's 10,000 feet! We were above the clouds, but my husband couldn't breathe and stayed on the bus. The second was a luau at the Sheraton on Maui. Skip it go to the Polynesian Cultural Center on Oahu excpt if it your only chance to go to one. On Hawaii, I booked a private taxi tour of Volcaones Nat. Park. The taxis are all waiting for you at the Hilo pier. I liked doing that much better than having to keep up with a group. This way we could take our time and do and go as we wanted. It cost $200 for 2 of us for a private tour.
