Best route from Hertz Downtown

We will be picking up our rental car from Hertz Downtown after our cruise arrives back at port on Sunday May 11th. From here we will be driving down to Key west. I know that the best route to take to Key West from Miami is usually the Florida Turnpike. But considering we pick the car up just yards away from Highway US-1 and it being a Sunday, is US-1 the best route to take in this instance? Or should I take the Dolphin Expressway to the Turnpike and use that route.

Tell Hertz when you pick up the car you want neverlost. Its a gps system. It will tell you. You can also use it to find a place to eat, or your hotel, or a gas station. Its worth the extra couple of dollars.

JimmyBog,

YES, you've got it! Take the Dolphin Expressway (836) to the turnpike. It is a bit out of the way, but US1 is full of traffic lights and traffic! The turnpike does have a small toll, but you will breeze along headache free!

Stop at Mrs. Mac's Kitchen for a great lunch on the way. It's around Key Largo, about half way down to Key West!

Fastest would be 836 to Turnpike. Since there won't be much traffic...if you are not in a hurry, and want to see more local scenery, then you can take US1.

For an even nicer drive, turn off US 1 onto Bayshore Dr. headed for Coconut Grove. Keep going south and wind around to Old Culter road. You will pass a lot of nice old homes, and beautiful banyan trees. Old culter will eventually run back into US 1, or you can take the SW 136 st fork back to US1.
