Miami traffic

We're flying into FLL arriving around 9:30 on a Friday morning. One of the options we're considering is to rent a car, drive to Miami, sightsee a little, then return to car to the National location near our hotel, the Intercontinental around 3-4 that afternoon. Realistically, how bad is traffic in the area?? We've driven in Orlando, Atlanta, DC,. San Francisco, but are from a very small town, with not much traffic.

Any guidance to offer? Also, if we do this, any must-sees in the Miami area?

It's not so much that it's bad, it's a city and it's congested. Most times the major highways are one big parking lot, but it moves and eventually you'll get where your going. As it's a tourist driven area, the signage is excellent, it's difficult to get lost. Coming from a small town, it's going to be a shock to you. Fear not, you'll be fine.

"We've driven in Orlando, Atlanta, DC,. San Francisco,"

If you could handle DC and San Fran .... Miami will be a cake walk.

Get a map and start marking where you'll go ... for the most part the greater Miami area streets are a straight forward numbered grid....
