For photo gurus here: What do you think of this lens for my Nikon D50

Maybe then I wouldn't need both my 18-55mm lens and my 55-200m lens?

This lens is going to leave you wanting at the wide angle end of the range, and 300 mm is rather long for most folks to hand hold. The 35mm equivalent is 42mm to 450mm. You would most likely need a monopod or tripod to keep from getting blurred images. I would think these focal lengths are more suitable for a full frame (i.e. 35mm) camera rather than the DX format of the D50.

I have experience with the Nikon 18-200mm lens. The quality is extremely good for the price and it has the VR (vibration reduction) feature. It is a good single lens for the majority of my needs.

We just had to buy a second one for Mrs. Bodger's D70. She too is quite pleased with the lens.
