I have a laptop with a webcam on it will I be able to use this to communicate with the kids back home or the service will be to slow on the Emerald Princess?

I do know that all the terminals in the internet cafe have webcams attached to them. :)

We use a webcam on my daughter's laptop weekly to stay in touch with her on the Grand where she works. The connection isn't the best, video is pretty jerky but audio is fine.

 

I would guess the Emerald would be similar.

How do you go live with a webcam to communicate? I am not all that computer literate when it comes to webcams and such. Is it through an internet provider?

Easiest way would be to use IM (Instant Messaging), MSN Messenger, or Yahoo.

You have a web cam on your desk or attached to a laptop and it has software with it that you load on your computer. The pictures are transmitted over the internet via you internet connection. Yes, you need an internet provider of some sort to transmit the pictures. If the other end has a video camera you can do a form of video conferencing.

 

In some areas it works OK from the ships and in other areas it does not work or works very slowly.
