In St. Maarten on Their Carnival's Grand Parade day

We will be in St. Maarten on 29 April the day of their Carnival's Grand Parade, which could cause major traffic problems in Phillipsburg. (I'm not sure, but it is possible that many stores might be closed during the day, and even foot traffic may be impaired). Thus, we are concerned about going on tours that require bus or taxi rides.

 

Are there beaches and non-shopping activities within walking distance from the ship's pier?
