Any communications with Nativeway?

The only kind of communications coming out of Grand Cayman is people who have cell phones. It's even hard to get a free line out using cell phones, because seems everyone is calling everyone all at one time.

Most all their land lines in Grand Cayman are still down. They are working around the clock to get communications back up and running. The country has taken a hard bend in the road. It is now at mercy of the outside world for help, and relief. It is hard to say when their land lines will be back up and running. They have restored some electric power to the G/Cayman. But most of the island is a total black out.

I live on Cayman Brac, and get first hand news. We here on the Brac can not call any land lines on G/Cayman yet.

I emailed Sharon this morning to ask about an upcoming tour we have booked. We are scheduled to be in GC on October 6th via the Triumph. She wrote back almost immediately! She says...

"We were hit by very hard by Ivan. I don't know if your ship will be stopping in Grand Cayman. While the island is rapidly on the mend, I don't know if things will be ready by October 6. If you do stop, Native Way will be ready and waiting, with open arms! However, I sort of doubt that your ship will stop. I hope to see you soon!"

I would like to be there for that kind of welcome! Time will tell.

We're supposed to be in Grand Cayman on 10/7/04 on the the Conquest. I called Carnival last night to find out if the Conquest had changed its itinerary this week. I was told that the Conquest was scheduled to visit Grand Cayman this week and therefore we should expect to visit there as well next week? I know you can get conflicting information when you call Carnival, but I waited almost 15 minutes while this rep spoke to his supervisor. We'll see!

Sorry, but it sounds like you spoke with a complete dud over at Carnival.

For the time being, Grand Cayman is closed to passenger ships and will be for several weeks yet to come. They need to get their infrastructure up and running again before they can even think of allowing cruise ships back. You were absolutely right in doubting this rep.

Depending on the cruise line, here's what's been substituted for Grand Cayman so far:

a day at sea

Progresso/Merida, Mexico

Costa Maya, Mexico
I'm scheduled to leave on November 13 on a cruise and one of our stops was supposed to be Grand Cayman. I'm not betting on anything for the moment with Grand Cayman.

Please report back and let us know what you guys did in lieu of Grand Cayman.

Royal Caribbean is also stating that cruise ships are supposed to return to Cayman starting next week - it's not just Carnival. I think they simply don't want to update their iteneraries so are waiting until the last possible minute to decide whether to head for Cayman or elsewhere. Also, it costs them money to set up excursions temporarily for replacement stops. I'm supposed to stop in Cayman on the 28th. I have the feeling we'll end up in Belize, but I'll probably find out on the 28th.

I just spoke to yet another rep with Carnival and I was told the same thing: The Conquest will be stopping at Grand Cayman this week and you can expect to stop at Grand Cayman next week. This rep stated that Grand Cayman rebuilt the pier area first so as not to lose money on tourism. He also stated that other ships that have cancelled Grand Cayman this week did so because of rough water and not being able to tender in???? I don't know what to think!

Wow, this is REALLY strange and it must be frustrating for those whose ships are supposed to stop at Grand Cayman next week. I just read another note here that stated RCCL is also supposed to stop there as scheduled.

According to Matteo's (Island Marketing Cayman) posts, he didn't anticipate ships stopping there until the beginning of November. The port area may be fine, but Grand Caymen must first make the place habitable again for its residents before they can start accepting tourists. Then, they need to make sure that there are places for the tourists to go, which means tour operators need to be up and running.

From caymannetnews.com http://www.caymannetnews.com/2004/09/740/emergency.shtml:
...Mr Bush also confirmed that the tourism industry infrastructure is expected to be ready to reopen by November 15, in time for the traditional influx of visitors to the island over the US Thanksgiving Day holiday....
The "Mr Bush" to which this article is referring is the Hon. McKeeva Bush, Leader of Government Business on Grand Cayman. The article was dated Sunday September 26.

At any rate, can those of who are supposed to sail there next week, please let us know what you wound up doing? :)
