cruisin0308 Posted March 6, 2008 #1 Share Posted March 6, 2008 Just wondering when snorkeling in these areas will we be swimming out to the reefs or just snorkeling the shoreline / shallows?
alment Posted March 7, 2008 #2 Share Posted March 7, 2008 You will need to swim out quite a bit at cemetry beach but you will be rewarded once you get to the reef :). The swim out at Smith Cove is much quicker but no where as rewarding.
Brieanna817 Posted March 7, 2008 #3 Share Posted March 7, 2008 Is the snorkeling off the beach at Smiths Cove OK to just see different kind of fish? Not really into snorkeling far out into the water so I was just wondering if Smiths Cove is right for me to just do a little snorkeling right off the beach....thanks!:)
alment Posted March 9, 2008 #4 Share Posted March 9, 2008 Sure the snorkling is OK. One other thing you may want to consider is that Smith Cove's beach is essentially rocks compared to nice soft sandy beach at Cemetery beach.
caymanjohn Posted March 10, 2008 #5 Share Posted March 10, 2008 You won't see much close in at Smith's Cove. Why not go to Eden Rock, it's right in the town with plenty of fish in just 6-10 feet of water.
Snorkel2Much Posted March 15, 2008 #6 Share Posted March 15, 2008 You will need to swim out quite a bit at cemetry beach but you will be rewarded once you get to the reef :). The swim out at Smith Cove is much quicker but no where as rewarding. We were at Cemetery Beach March 3rd, and the "live reef show" started less than 10 feet from shore and kept going for as far as I could swim. Start off by walking about 20-30 yards back towards town after emerging from the path to the beach, then enter the water and swim out.
Brieanna817 Posted April 18, 2008 #7 Share Posted April 18, 2008 Is there a place around cemetary beach to rent snorkel gear and maybe even a mat or life jacket?? thanks!
nolaAlive Posted April 19, 2008 #8 Share Posted April 19, 2008 There are no facilities except an occasional portajohn sometimes at Cemetery. You need to bring everything you want with you. There are no lockers. You could rent gear at either of the dive shops at Eden Rock area - 100 yards or so from where the tender drops you off. Public bus is $2.50 each way pp to Cemetery. Zydecocruiser has some pictures on his website: http://www.zydecocruiser.com/conquest_07/GC/cb.htm

5sailingeagles Posted August 5, 2008 #10 Share Posted August 5, 2008 Here are some pics of Smiths cove for future use. Didnt seem like a good place to snorkel to us. (but we could be wrong) Was great for some sun and getting wet in the waves:D It was great for photos. A nice 15 min walk from the port area. Just keep going past Edens Rock about 1/2 mile. No side walks so watch for traffic if you walk. Also take water with you, didnt see any refreshments around. A bit of paradise:p http://s40.photobucket.com/albums/e215/humphrey2/Grand%20Cayman/?action=view¤t=P2130664.jpg
swimgirl1 Posted August 5, 2008 #11 Share Posted August 5, 2008 Those are great pictures of Cemetery Beach! Thank you for posting, not alot of pic's on here of it. Was the path easy to find, and is this a standard stop for the bus?:)
swimgirl1 Posted August 5, 2008 #12 Share Posted August 5, 2008 Anyone have any problems with leaving their stuff unattended (camera, MP3 etc.) there- while the family is in the water?
jean-lynd Posted August 6, 2008 #13 Share Posted August 6, 2008 We had no problem leaving our stuff on the beach. I didn't notice any bus stop signs the week we were there. You can just flag the bus down and they will stop. I hope this helps! Enjoy!
nolaAlive Posted August 16, 2008 #14 Share Posted August 16, 2008 Anyone have any problems with leaving their stuff unattended (camera, MP3 etc.) there- while the family is in the water? Never a problem and also I never leave anything on the beach that I care if it is stolen. It is a good rule to follow. The bus will drop you off right at the path, but if not, it is obvious. Buses (vans) don't stop anywhere if someone doesn't want to exit or if someone doesn't want to get on. Just tell the driver where you want to go. The bus stop for the ride back to town is directly across the street.
RooksWS6 Posted August 21, 2008 #15 Share Posted August 21, 2008 Ok, we had been planning on doing Eden Rock without a guide, but after seeing these photos of Cemetary Beach, I'm rethinking it. Has anyone been fortunate enough to have gone to both that can give a recommendation? Thanks!

Has anyone been fortunate enough to have gone to both that can give a recommendation? Thanks! Do both? Especially if you have your own gear. Often after I have played with the sting rays or gone snorkeling elsewhere, I will end the day with a snorkel at Eden Rock. You can do Cemetery in the morning and Eden Rock after? Eden Rock is maybe 100 yards from the cruise ship tender pier. A few Eden rock pics: http://www.zydecocruiser.com/valor_06/GC/gc_3.htm http://www.zydecocruiser.com/eden_rock.htm For that matter, you can also walk to the Cali wreck location - and a few more Eden Rock pics http://www.zydecocruiser.com/gc_dec_2005.htm
