What to do in Freeport?

Can anyone help me decide what to do in Freeport? I have read some mixed things about Freeport and would really like to find a place to do some good snorkeling or a stingray experience if there is one.

Does anyone have any good suggestions or ideas?

There is really no stingray experience - that is in the Cayman islands. There is a thread here about Junkanoo... it has some good advice. Snorkeling can be done thru the ship. You are at Grand Bahama Island for a short amount of time, so I would look into the ship sponsored outings. The ship docks in a industrial area with nothing around it for tourists. It is a ways to anything so cab fare can be expensive. One time I would suggest going with the ship. Now if you go there to stay a few days there is so much to do.

Love Grand Bahama! We've been going for over twenty years. Can't really capture the island as a port stopover but you can try! Wear your bathing suit and coverup, bring a beach towel, get off the ship and take a shared taxi or bus to whatever says "Port Lucaya" or "Beach". Should be around $5 per person. Port Lucaya is where the beach, casino, hotels etc. are located. Plenty of restaurants ring Count Basie Square. Try some cracked conch, have a Bahama Mama and just chill. The beach in front of the Sheraton/Westin complex is right there and there's a beach shack (Billy Joe's) for food and drinks just a short walk down the beach. If you have time, you can ask people where the police station is and head to the public bus stop right next to it. Bus drivers will take you to Taino Beach and arrange to pick you back up for around $2-3 each (each way). Just don't stay in the harbor area or head to downtown Freeport. There's nothing to see there and you'll get the wrong idea about Grand Bahama. Well, not wrong really, it's just not what I would be looking for as a tourist.

Thanks!

Sounds like some good advice! We have read a lot about Port Lucaya and I think that's where we're headed!

We are going to try Coral Cay in Roatan for some "ocean wildlife" experience instead.

I love the advice cruise critic people give!
