Atlantis Submarine Cayman or Cozumel

Anybody have any thoughts on which tour to take. What would be the primary difference and any thoughts on the experience at either site would be welcome. My cruise is the last of November so there should be no problem with recent hurricances.

DS and I did it in Coz. It was ok but nothing great. Saw a little coral and a few fish and scuba divers. I wouldn't do it again. Don't know about GC.

Please note, the Atlantis Submarine will be out of service until February 2005 as it undergoes repairs from damage caused by Hurricane Ivan.

Someone on these boards posted pictures of the hurrican damage, and in one of the pictures you can clearly see the Atlantis submarine, which had been demolished. Unfortunately, I wouldn't count on seeing it back in business anytime in the very near future.

I'm sure the people in Grand Cayman are working as hard as they can to restore their homes and businesses and to get their lives back in order. They have my prayers and sympathy, and I have faith that things will get better for them very soon.

If it is the picture I am thinking of, and the "submarine" had twin outboards, that is the "semi-submarine" or sort of an ultimate glass bottom boat.

I think with some paint, glass, new bimini, and perhaps some hammering and welding, it will be back in service. At least they won't have to salvage it off the bottom.

Mac: We went down more than 100 Ft. at the Wall in Grand Cayman many years ago. It is definetly not in the semi-sub. If it were my choice and Grand Cayman does open up for tourists in November which is still questionable, I would swim with the Sting Rays this time. GC is the best option for the Atlantis dive, unless Australia and the Great Barrier Reef is in your immediate travel plans. Wait until next time, if you have too. It is worth it also buy 800 speed or higher film.

The semi-submarine is not the only toy they have. In addition to the submarine that goes down to the 100 foot level, they also have an 800 and 1000 foot dive in a research submarine.

Per the Atlantis website, it is expected to be operational Nov 15 - maybe they have a spare one somewhere.

The really deep (and pricy) dives are expected to start again Nov 1.

It is the 100 foot dive submarine not expected back until Feb 2005.
