question about adjoining cabins

Has any been in an adjoing cabin? Is there much differance?

We were in an adjoining room on Explorer of the Seas - cabin#1694 in the aft of the ship - deck 10 - and, honestly, never heard a thing. In fact, up until the last day when I finally saw a couple coming out of there, I started to wonder if the room was empty. Maybe we were just lucky; but, based on that experience, I wouldn't hesitate to get an adjoining room - especially if it was in a section of the boat that I really wanted. We LOVE aft!!

We were in a port side adjoining/connecting cabin on the NCL Dawn a few years ago, and I think the folks next door were smokers. We're non-smokers, and we certainly didn't like the smoky smell coming through. The next year we booked a port balcony again but made sure it didn't adjoin and we didn't have a problem. We're pretty sure the smoke smell came through the adjoining door, and not the balcony doors, as we kept them closed most of the time.

So if you're not a fan of cigarette smoke, choose a cabin that doesn't connect.

Most cruise ships these days have declared all cabins to be non-smoking. You could probably have complained at the desk and they would have informed the people in that cabin that smoking is only allowed on the verandas. Also, some ships consider port side to be the smoking side - if they allow it at all. Have never cruised NCL, so maybe their policy is different. Happy cruising!

Actually this is not true. Carnival, HAL, NCL, Princess, etc all allow smoking in their stateroom.

The following statement was taken from the RC website and is true for all Royal Caribbean ships and, I've been told other lines will soon be following suit. I hope so - I'm a non smoker too. I just got off RC Explorer of the Seas and they even designated certain nights in the casino to be non-smoking.

What a blessing!

Q: What is the Smoking Policy onboard?s.gifA: Effective January 2008, smoking is only permitted in designated areas and outdoors on the Starboard side of the ship (contact the Guest Relations Desk for details). Smoking is not permitted in any dining venue, theater, hallway or corridor. Smoking is not permitted inside any stateroom, however, it is permitted on private outdoor balconies of balcony staterooms. A $250 penalty will be applied to the SeaPass for guests found smoking in staterooms. Cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco must be properly disposed of and never thrown overboard. A guest must be at least 18 years of age to purchase, possess or use tobacco onboard.

The new policy will go into effect aboard 18 of 21 ships initially, with Legend of the Seas, Rhapsody of the Seas and Splendour of the Seas following suit with the 2008 summer season.

Considering that Royal Caribbean is only one cruiselines-- to state that MOST cruiseships hve nonsmoking cabins is NOT TRUE at all- there are a vast majority of cruiselines that allow smoking in all cabins.

I sailed a ship last year that did the non smoking night in the casino-- We checked back every hour and the place was empty almost all night. Imust say i was surprised because i read how people would go there if it was non smoking.

When ships have a designated side to smoke on they are talking about the open public decks--not the passenger cabin decks.

Sorry if I misled anyone. Allow me to correct my statement to say "almost all Royal Caribbean ships have this new policy and it will soon encompass all of their ships". And since RC has over 20 ships, that in itself is a lot. And I have been on other ships that have this policy; but, with many cruises behind us, I don't remember precisely which ones they were. I think you will see this policy becoming more common in the future. And, by the way, on non-smoking nights in the casino on the Explorer, the casino was always crowded. Now, can we please change the subject? Thanks.

As to the original question, I wouldn't be afraid of connecting rooms - just my opinion. Whew!!

whew-- ya had me worried there.

Yes- I thought ALL royal ships were non smoking cabins by now..if not by now very soon.

Big difference from all cruiselines-- to ALL Royal ships.

]By the way, just to clear up some of your information, some ships did have one side non-smoking (in the state rooms) - not an iron-clad rule, but they tried to encourage smokers to reserve staterooms only on one side (usually port side) by putting ashtrays only in those rooms. And a few ships were declared completely non-smoking everywhere (those didn't make it). Maybe right now, they mostly allow smoking in staterooms; but, that was not always the case. This information came from a travel agent who's been in the business many years. And we've been cruising a lot of years on many lines (some now defunct) and have encountered the no-smoking policy in staterooms before. So, you are mostly correct - but perhaps not completely. Now, I'm done!!

I have to put my two cents in and tell you what happened to me. I do not smoke, never have. We were on the Mariner (RCCL) someone was smoking above our balcony (about 2 decks up) and the wind was blowing the ash's right onto our balcony  while I was sitting there. I am not againist smoking and it is a fine line as to tell people what they can and can not do. Its to bad that there isn't one/two rules that is a set standard on all ships just so people (smokers and non smokers) know what to expect and to be fair to everyone, just my thoughts!

In case you're interested, Carnival has declared new policy that will be in effect on the Carnival Splendor - no smoking will be allowed in the Spa staterooms. I think this is a sign of the future - yippee!
