Halifax, Pier 21, suggestions for visiting

Recommended Posts

I'm going to be in Halifax in early May for a business meeting and will have time on my own. Can I get to Pier 21 on foot from a hotel on Upper Water Street?

Also any suggestions for how to spend time in this wonderful museum?

Thank you!

This is the web page for Pier 21.....http://www.pier21.ca/

Its not that far a walk. Done it many times maybe 15 minutes or less. Lot's to see as you stroll along. Stay out of the Casino unless you feel lucky.

Thanks Ed! I stay out of casinos! I did a GOOGLE map from the Pier 21 WEB site. I couldn't tell if there was a major road in the way of the walk. A US city would likely have a freeway in an area like that.

I walked it in pourinf, freezing rain and wind in january. It wasn't a pleasant walk but worth it. You must be sure to take in the 4D movie they have it's not only a good story but one of the very few 4D movie theatres in the world.

Wow so there is stuff to do right there? Sounds good.

Depending on what you have in mind, you could simply hang out there. There is also a very long boardwalk to your right when you exit the building. Just stroll along it and you will find lots of shops, restaurants, museums, etc.

The cruise ships actually arrive right at Pier 21. You won't even have to go outside!

Does the Tall Ship Silva (or similar) dock within walking distance? Are there independent tours available nearby?

Thanks

Yes, it would be about a 10 minute walk down the boardwalk. There are a couple of tours there and you can't miss them.

Thanks for the reply. Looks like it's best to book a tour in Halifax.:D

Thanks to all who helped me work out the details. I loved it so much I returned the next day to spend more time there and to see the movie again.

Absolutely outstanding museum!

Good to know. Coming in on a cruise ship, we won't get to do everything. I'll definitely put it on our list for next month for a rainy day or if I'm not up for much walking, or if we just have some extra time.

You actually dock at Pier 21 so it is very handy for cruise passengers. I forget what it cost (I got the senior price) but it is worth it.

There is a little refreshment shop and a gift shop which is very nice. The place where you do the historical research is in the same area of the building. I believe you can visit the gift shop without buying a ticket to get in the exhibits.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, it is a real gem. I went with a friend from Australia who had relatives that emigrated to Canada through Pier 21.

The admission is $8.50 for adults and 7.50 for seniors, well worth it.

Glad to here that you enjoyed our city again! I hope the weather cooperated while you were here although I am sure that it was not like Texas.

Well, it wasn't like Texas, but I really enjoyed the cool Halifax weather. Fresh air! Rain! Great food! Wonderful people!

Did I mention the great food?

It sounds lovely. I'm packing my sweaters, my rain poncho, and my restaurant guides. I leave on the first leg of my trip in a month.
