My Legend Vacation 3/9/08 - 3/16/08

Embarkation was a breeze. We were on the ship by 11:30 am, but could not access our cabin until 1:30 pm.

The ship was full as it was a Spring Break week. Not TOO many kids, but enough that you knew they were there. Many more "regular" families on board.

I only met our cabin steward once. I never saw him any other time, but he sure did a hell of a job. Notable: I took a collapsible cooler with a 24pk of Coke Zero with me, and he filled the cooler with ice every day!

Many found this particular ship to be decorated quite gaudy. I noted the urns many complain about, but they don't particularly stand out enough to be hated. The interior decor was dark but lots of chrome, glass, and spot lighting. It was very glimmery. The ship was very clean, and the staff all went out of their way to speak to you when you walk past them.

The Lido deck was well kept, yet crowded, and you would often see 2 people taking up a large table for 4+. This left families without places to sit. The food was total buffet style, and I didn't care for it. It seemed poorly prepared. I spent most lunches at the cheeseburger stand. Breakfast was ok if you didn't eat the scrambled "eggs". I'm not sure what they really are, but they show up on about every buffet you visit anywhere. Sloppy yellow stuff, really.

The dining room was spectacular. If you cannot find something goof on the menu, then there must be something wrong with you. Our wait staff at table 319 was nothing short of the best. One exception was our Croatian drink server. I didn't get along with her, as she was a rude smart-ass, and I would have soon tripped her up as she walked past. She made a snide remark about the fact that we never ordered any alcoholic beverages at dinner. I simply ordered a Coke every night. One night, she simply skipped our table and I didn't get a Coke. I tracked her down and thanked her for the visit, and she sarcastically apologized. I told her to not bother coming back. The next night she stopped by and smarted something else off, but I brought my own Coke and told her to get lost.

We never saw our Maitre D'. We didn't tip him at the end either.

We chose to book all of our shore excursions online before the trip, rather than pay the inflated ship charges.

Grand Cayman was our first stop. We took the Stingray/Snorkel trip through Captain Marvins. It cost us about 1/2 of what the ship wanted. We had to settle for the short trip because of time constraints, but it was a lot of fun. The sand bar is much better than the tours that take you to 12 feet of water and let you swim with them.

I have been to Grand Cayman twice, and I am not really impressed with this island.

Second stop was Cozumel. Again, no ship excursion. We hailed a taxi to Paradise Beach for $40 both ways ( $30 + $10 tip) for 3 people. The beach was free, and you could use a beach chair if you purchased something. It was a little crowded, but not out of control. The beach wasn't very pretty, and the sand was crushed shell. It hurt your bare feet. We got back to town for about 1 1/2 hour of strolling the shops. Found some cool shirts and a bottle of Mezcal for $5. The venders are pretty aggressive in Cozumel, but if you say "No Moleste", they leave you be.

2nd time to Cozumel, and I would go there again and again. I really like it there.

Third stop was Belize City. Don't expect crystal clear water here. The pier is in town, and the water is murky. You have to travel to an island to see clear water. The reefs are at about 50% as the last hurricane damaged them, and they are being bleached by the warm waters due to global warming. The ship has to tender here, about 5 miles offshore, but the ride in is about 15 minutes. We opted to go online with Major Tom's Cave Tubing here. (dot net) This tour was un-Belizeable!!!. The operators were first class, and extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Again we saved 1/2 of cost of the cruise tours.

They even bought us a Belizian lunch on the way back Beans and rice, with chicken. The rice is cooked in Coconut milk, and the dish has cilantro and lemon in it, and it was awesome. They guarantee you an on-time return for your return the pier.

Note: The river is anywhere from 3-4 inches in some spots to 40 feet inside the cave. They tie you together so you don't become separated like the cruise tours do. We saw many cruise tours tipping over and freaking out inside the cave. The water is "refreshing" to say the least, but you get used to it real quick. The 30 minute hike to the river is beautiful through the rainforest. This was our favorite excursion we have ever done. Well worth it, and well priced!

Fourth stop was Roatan Island. I have one word for this place.

Unbelievable.

We arrived at about 8 am, and we bolted the ship immediately looking for a taxi. We researched this stop as well, and decided to go to West Bay, near Tabanay Beach. We were the first people there, and the entire beach for about 2-3 miles was vacant. Then the ship tour bus pulled up and ruined it. Ship cost for this beach was about $70 pp. Our cost was $40 for 3 people. (taxi ride) You don't pay the taxi driver until he comes back to pick you up and take you back to the pier!!!

(Tabanay Beach charges $35 pp to sit on a chair if you decide to cab it in)

You can sit literally 5 feet from Tabanay Beach on a towel for free.

My daughter and I didn't sit on the beach for one minute. As soon as we got there, we snapped a few photos of the beautiful empty beach, and immediately put our snorkel gear and headed for the reef. You can swim right to it in about 2 minutes. I have snorkeled on a number of Caribbean reefs in the past, but I can honestly say that Roatan boasts the most beautiful reef I have ever seen!!! We didn't come ashore for the entire 5 hours we were there. This island was undoubtedly our favorite!

Note: If you choose to go snorkeling, take a bunch of boxes of Cheerios from the ship so you can feed the fish. At any given time, we had 300+ reef fish around us. People would swim near us and you hear them cackling like loons about the amount of fish around us. Be careful, as the Bermuda Chub can bite pretty hard, and become aggressive with the food (They have small beak-like mouths). The sergeant majors and yellow-tail snappers are peaceful and will eat right out of your hand.

On-Line Bookings note: While it was in the back of my mind about not making it back to the ship on time, not once did we even come close to being late. We always had over 2 hours left to wander the pier area after our excursions. Most of the positive reviews on tour operators you read about here will guarantee you back to the pier on time. Because they rely on these reviews to stay in business, they don't want to screw up your time with them. It only takes a few bad reviews to ruin their business.

Ship Activities: The pools are extremely crowded. There are signs placed around that say not to leave a chair with a towel to hold your chair for an extended perioud of time, but they DO NOT enforce it. I created my own rule. I sat patiently for 15-20 minutes watching chairs and if no one claimed one after that amount of time, I kindly removed their towel and it became mine. A chair is no good without a butt in it.

The poolside music is absolutely horrible. The Tropical Sounds band was two guys, a drum machine, a keyboard, and a bass guitar. They would find a key, a rhythm, and play the same thing for 20 minutes straight. I swear they didn't sing anything, but mumbled something to make it sound like they were. No songs you know at all. The recorded music that played was techno garbage. If you want REAL music while enjoying the sun, take your iPod!!!

The clubs onboard are HORRIBLE. They were mostly empty because of how horrible the entertainment was. The piano bar was a total joke, and the woman playing in there sounded like a bad karaoke singer. She COULD play the piano, but she spent a considerable amount of time hee hee'ing and giggling instead of singing. She didn't know many requests. I only stayed for a few minutes, it was so bad. We would visit the other bars, and they were nearly empty most of the time. There was a Legends Bar near the casino that people smoked cigars in.

Most people drank at the pool, or at the casino.

Our cruise director was extremely annoying. I cringed every time she opened her mouth. She sounded like Tanya Tucker with an English accent.

Debarkation was a piece of cake. We carried our own luggage off, so we walked from our room, past all of the people who were too lazy to carry their own, right through the door, and down the gangway. Customs looked at our passports, and waved us right on through. We exited the terminal, and were in a cab on the way to the airport all in a matter of 15 minutes.

We enjoyed our trip. However, after sailing on the larger ships, I prefer the giant vessels to the smaller ones. More to do. Also, this was my 2nd Carnival cruise, and the first one after sailing with Royal Caribbean. I have to say that I like the RCCL ships better, the food was better, and the onboard activities are FAR superior. The staff was much friendlier on Carnival though.

Next time, we will choose RCCL.

Great review!! Thanks for sharing. We too are taking our first Carnival cruise in October on the Legend. We've sailed on RCCL and Princess and have only "heard" how Carnival is. It'll be nice for us to make our own decision after sailing.

We're looking forward to the ports - too bad RCCL/Princess didn't have this itinerary!

Thanks for your review! I've been on several Carnival cruises and have only had the good fortune of having a good/fun piano player on one cruise. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a good one on the Liberty in a few months!

I don't know if I would necessarily call it lazy ... maybe guilty of overpacking is a better description! :D

We were on the Legend two weeks ago and had similar experiences to

yours except YOuuuuuuuuuuusef the Maitre'd!!! He came to our table

EVERY nite and stopped and chatted. We actually enjoyed him and I

was very surprised to see him leading the " SHOWtime" dance lines

at dinner in Costume!!!

Agree with you on piano bar and the women who can't sing. Also think

the CD was annoying.

This was our first spirit class cruise and while we decided to much prefer

the larger Conquest class, we will be staying with Carnival.

Thanks for the nice review. I will be on the Legend (for the second time) in two weeks. I always find it amazing how much people's taste differs. I have seen a number of people mention how they would take Carnival's food over RCCL's any day of the week an twice on Sunday. Then others, like you, say the opposite. You just never know.

The one thing that concerned me a bit is the comment about allowing 15 minutes with a towel on the chair. Heck, I've used 15 minutes just running back to my room to use the bathroom and grab more sunscreen. And that is literally going directly there and back. I don't think that renders me a chair hog, and I would not be happy if my stuff was moved in that much time. If you're talking a half hour, sure, then I can see it.

And I know that there are a lot of violators out there, don't get me wrong, but 15 minutes is not a long time on a big cruise ship where people may be located far away from lido.

It is understandable for the senior citizens to have it removed, but the young people are capable, and lazy. We overpacked too. Matter of fact, we had to buy another suitcase to bring back the goodies we bought while ashore.

Well, I would watch the chair for 15 minutes, then I would start my timer for 15 minutes. So I guess 30 minutes was more like it. Either way, I didn't feel guilty. Most of the time, the same people were in the same seats (if they were there). You could just about count on seeing the same folks day after day at the pool.

Thank you so much for your review. Did you notice a particular time that the pool deck began to get crowded? We are pretty early risers so I wonder if getting chairs will be a problem for us.
The middle pool with the stage and cheeseburger bar would be full by 10 am on sea days. The others were hit and miss, with the aft pool being adults only. You will have no problem finding tables and chairs under the decks, but they are slim picking in the sun, unless you utilize the timer method on the loungers. Most people agree 30 minutes is plenty of time to "reclaim" a lounger.

Yes warmer water kills it. First search that came up, I'm sure there are many more...http://www.canary-project.org/photos.html

And Cheerios is NOT bad for the fish.

Well I am not saying Cheerios specifically are bad for fish, I mean feeding fish, or any wildlife, is not recommended.

Your cruise may not have been stellar, but that review kicked butt!!:p

Thank you so much - you gave me some invaluable info since we'll be on that ship in July. Especially thanks for the snorkeling info. We had planned to snorkel in Belize... now we will wait till Roatan. GREAT help, thank you!

I'm printing this out to keep in my cruise folder - I will be referring to it from time to time. Thanks again!

360, thanks for the great review! We are cruising the Legend in October and I have been trying to decide what to do for excursions. The ones that you took sound just about what we are interested in doing. I, too, worry about the time constraints and doing your own excursions. But, seems like you had plenty of time!

360: Thanks for the awesome review. I really enjoyed the information about Roatan, as that's the one port I haven't been to.

It's a shame that you had a Maitre D that did not visit you. I've only been on one Carnival cruise in which this happened, and the Maitre D had been sick. As for RCCL both times I sailed we did not have the Maitre D visit us at all. I also prefer Carnival's food to RCCL, but everyone has different tastes.

Did you happen to see any shows? If you did did you enjoy them?

Did you happen to see any shows? If you did did you enjoy them?

We went to a balancing act/g-rated comedy show early in the cruise. My 9 year old liked it, but the adults were all ho-hum. The comedian kept begging for laughter. We talked to others who went to his R-Rated show and they all said it was 100 times funnier.

Our dinner was late, so we didn't get out and about until 11 pm if we went at all. Early ports mean early bedtimes.

FTW-When we got to Roatan, they NEVER announced the ship was cleared and you could depart the gangway. I just happened to be up on the top deck looking over and saw some stragglers getting off the ship at 8 am. I ran back to the room and gathered the wife and kid and we got down there as fast as we could. They had the gate on the pier closed, but we fell in with an early tour and walked right through. We negotiated a taxi with a guy named Manuel, and he told us $40 US round trip for all 3 of us. We hopped in and were at West Bay in about 15 minutes, because there wasn't anyone else off the ship yet. He took us to Bananarama and dropped us off, and asked when we wanted him to meet us back there. Roatan is 2 hours behind ship time, so we told him about 1 hour before we were to be back on-board. He was there early waiting on us. We got a frozen drink from Bananarama bar, loaded up and was back at the pier in about 25 minutes in time to hit the pier vendors. As I stated before, you don't pay the taxi drivers until you get back to the pier. That way you are guaranteed to get a lift back, because they really want the money. $40 US is worth 600 limpieras (a LOT to them)

Cozumel, they kept closing the gangway for 1/2 hour at a time to allow 2 other ships to dock. It was a bit inconvenient, as the gangway loaded down with people who couldn't get off the ship. There was like 7 ships in port that morning. Cozumel was packed. Senor Frogs and C&C's was absolutely packed to the hilt with young revelers. We docked at the south pier this time. I didn't like it as much as the north pier we docked at last July with RCCL. The shopping was not nearly as good at the south pier.

Belize, you have to get tender tickets to get off the ship. You go to the Follies Lounge early and tell them you have an excursion and they will get you off the boat before the people who don't have excursions. It didn't take very long. We were ashore at 9 am.

Wasn't Youseff fabulous!!!

YES:eek: ...I forgot all about that woman in the piano bar. I guess I tried to block her out of my mind like labor pain...man she sucked!!!

I liked the CD, my DH didn't.

I also loved Roatan. I think Roatan and St Lucia are the most beautiful places I've ever been....and Coz is the most fun. :D

Must try a Conquest Class ship...everyone seems to love them.
