Spirit Review - Long - Just Returned!

i know, i did the spirit in december and loved it...but the complaints started about that time. one person, from my cruise, was the worse...he hated it. you have to just read the whole thing..our cruise was not a party ship and he wanted to party. i still think the complainers were on a different ship...except for the ship not being new, i can't see much to complain about.

when i did the NCL star to alaska, that whole summber before my cruise...complaints! worse ship ever, etc. just have to remember, each cruise is totally different. crew members are changing all the time..

even on the same ship, it's different.

on our cruise, it was the last for that captain, 1/2 the casino dealers and over 100 crew members. some were going to the newer ships, jade and gem, others went on vacation.

i am trying to plan another cruise on the spirit for next winter..it would be the 1st time we have repeated a cruise. (it was that good)

I'm glad you enjoyed your time on the Spirit as much as we did. We did the Repo cruise out of NY and went to St. Thomas, St. Lucia, Barbados, Curucao, Cozumel, Belize, Guatemala and NO. I would have one recommendation for anyone going to Cozumel, take the tour to Tallum. It is fantastic and the guides speak wonderful English and will show you a great place to get real Mexican food.

Well, considering that we WERE in a different country - and we had experienced so many guides in the past who's English was far from impeccable....yes. I mean, this man had an authoritive voice that was very "James Earl Jones". His knowledge of birds, trees, follage, history and the way that he presented it to us was really impressive.

Well, considering that English is the official language of Belize...I'm glad the natives could speak it well.

Thanks for the review. I'm worried now...we're on the Spirit in June, cabin 6009. It never dawned on me to check what was above us (first timers), and I see that it is the lounge? I guess it's going to be a long sleepless week. Do you think a white noise machine would take care of the noise that you experienced??

You might want to call your TA and see if you can change cabins. Maybe you can see if there is something available on deck 5. Good luck:)

Does the SPIRIT have a movie theatre? If not, do they show movies anywhere? I didnt think I'd like the outdoor screens they have now on Princess and Carnival .. but .. I DO I DO I DO! So I'm wondering if I need to bring a bunch of DVDS?

thanks

i'm just wondering......isn't English the official language of Belize? I think i've remembered that from somewhere but am not completely sure.

Until you hear Maurice, it's hard to explain his fantastic diction. Yes, English is the official language, as it is here in the US. But I think Sue's point is that for being in Central America and a fledgling democracy, Maurice's diction is impeccable (much better than many who have lived their entire lives in the US), and he does speak with the authority you might hear from a college professor.

According to the OP the dining room no longer offers alternative selections. I am very dissappointed because last year, they always had a grilled chicken breast or steak if you didn't like what was on the menu. Looks like I won't be eating at Windows or Garden every night!

Great review!

We were on the same cruise, also on deck 6! Was that the anchor that made all of that thumping racket!? I honestly thought it was a body falling down the steps, or someone throwing the busts/statues.

I told my DH that CD Ray reminded me of John Lovitz! He did a great job keeping the college kids entertained.

I think I went to the first night of karaoke, it was hoppin' and I really enjoyed singing along. Did you see the Patsy Cline tribute?

We didn't eat lunch at Raffles much, usually the BBQ on the pool deck, Blue Lagoon or Biergarten. Breakfasts in Raffles were pretty good, though. I loved the WAFFLES!!!

By the way, we met a very nice couple from Oregon who were traveling with the CSK group.

I wonder If we were the nice couple from Oregon?? I think we were the only one's from oregon on the trip from CSK. Was It a big fat man (me) and a pretty little blonde lady (My wife)?? Anyways I will be writing a review also when I get some free time. Two things to say. Thanks for the great post and for as many college kids on that cruise I will give the staff great props for keeping them in check and still letting them have a great time.

Nice review, interesting point about the black man in Belize who spoke impeccable English...almost like a college professor. What did you expect? For him to speak some language that you couldn't understand. JMO.

hmmm...well this is JMO as well. was this comment necessary? you do realize that not all people "educated" in the US speak proper grammar. i'd say you are being overly sensitive.

my interpretation of the OPs description was to merely praise this man for speaking their official language better than our own citizens...as well as the manner in which he conducts his tours. even if he had an accent i'm sure this man would STILL maintain that image of a college professor...from how others have described him.

i just hope you aren't playing the race card on such an innocent, yet insightful review.

I think the couple we met may have been older than you.

Thank you very much for the review. There are quite a number of us NCL "virgins" sailing Nov 30 on Spirit out of NOLA. We've all sailed on Celebrity on a TA last December (and several us on other cruises before).

I'm sure we're going to have fun, how can you not when you leave from New Orleans ;).

Of course he spoke impeccable English...Belize was a British colony for over 100 years (it was "British Honduras" until 1973 and became an independent country in 1981). It is the only English-speaking country in Central America.

Sorry for the rant...that is the social studies teacher in me. :p

We booked through NCL directly. I've gone on to the website to check what is available now, and there are no cabins available for our party size. Oh well, live and learn!;)

We're sailing on her in 3 weeks and have a cabin in the same general area. I didn't even think to check what was above/below it either, but we'll manage. I guess ear plugs would be our best bet. Perhaps seeing as it isn't prime spring break time (it is actually family vacation time as schools are out) there won't be as much loud stomping overhead at 4am? I have read posts from others that sailed in the same part of the ship and there weren't a lot of complaints.

While it is not on the menu, it is still available if you ask for it.

For the OP, there is no movie theater or screen onboard.

Yes, I know that Belize was "British Honduras"...because Maurice told us the entire history of Belize. I guess the surprize was finding someone that could easily have been teaching college or something. We speak English here in the US too....but, that doesn't mean that we all speak impeccable English.
