pshrynk Posted March 24, 2008 #1 Share Posted March 24, 2008 this is marginally connected with cruising, but... I called AA to see what an upgrade to First Class for the 20 hour flight to Santiago would be and it was more than the entire cruise! I declined. A couple glasses of not really great wine and wider seats to sleep sitting upright in are great, but not worth that much. I'll try again at the airport and hope that the more usual $300 upgrade is available. I can't believe that there so many full seats in first class on all those planes I get on! Do you have miles with AA? The reason I ask is if the flight is overbooked in coach for that flight, you might be upgraded to first class at no charge. This happened to me w/Delta flying JFK to Shannon, Ireland. I had coach seats, but since they overbooked the coach seats, I got bumped up to first class and I am a Skymiles Member with Delta. Just something you can cross you fingers for!
blindrid Posted March 24, 2008 #3 Share Posted March 24, 2008 As I used to travel every week for a living, I found the all of those seats are probably 75% upgrade due to the customers' club status and not paid for. The others are probably split between business passengers (company paying) and a few that have the money to fly it regardless. If you are in an airplane every week flying somewhere, it is worth it and I typically on cared if it was a long flight (like this one) or a red-eye so I could sleep a bit better. Good luck with your plans.
Sox Fan Cruiser Posted March 24, 2008 #4 Share Posted March 24, 2008 AA has a lot of people in their premium clubs. I am Platinum and don't always get the upgrade. There must be a lot of Executive Platinums out there. They are the ones that get the upgrades.
Soccer Mom 96 Posted March 24, 2008 #5 Share Posted March 24, 2008 Hi! If you haven't already purchased the air, have your TA call Princess and see what their price is for the upgrade. They have contract rates with many of the airlines. I was able to get the business class air through Princess at 50% of the AA website. Hope this helps.
