Just back and rented a car!

:) Just thought I would let you know that renting a car in Playa is VERY easy..it cost about 70 dollars per day with ALL the extra insurance. We found getting to Tulum amazingly easy and VERY well marked..can't get lost!! For a family of four it was SOOO much less expensive than the ships tours (70 for car, 20 total for admission to Tulum and free for the beaches at Aktumal!..ships price would have been about 400 plus)

Had an amazing lunch at a resturant along the way..expensive for Mexico ($25/pp)but so worth it..ceviche was wonderful and the drinks were killer..it is on the left side of the highway on the way to Tulum with a big sign over it (can't remember the name). Had hammocks and the best guacamole ever. So relaxing and comfortable with terrific food. You eat outside under the palm covered roof.

We enjoyed Tulum but it was hot..so pretty next to the ocean. Not many signs to explain the site but you could hire a guide for $10/pp. I think if we did it again perhaps we would do that but since it was so hot (and it was only March) we were glad we were on our own time schedule and not a tours..those people did not seem very happy.
