Questions About Ncl Spirit Out Of Nyc

Hello,

Wanted to ask the message boards people for there help and opinions on NCL Spirit out of NYC. I have cruised twice with NCL DAWN out of NYC. I was happy both times. We enjoy the freestyle cruising. My concerns about the Spirit is that its an older ship(1998 and refurbished on 2005). Not sure if that is something I should worry about, since the DAWN was a 2004 ship and I cruised a few months and then 2yrs after. Does the Spirit have a movie theater? I noticed that the restaurants are all similar to the Dawn, so I'm not too worried about that. I am thinking about sailing on the 8day Eastern Caribbean cruise that goes to San Juan,PR, Tortola, and Samana,DR.....If anyone has tips on any of the stops, I would apprecaite it! Been to PR quite a few times, but wouldn't mind some other suggestions.

Thanks!!!!!:D

I am on the Spirit in May. WE did a one nighter out of NY in October, the ship is in very good shape, I would not be concerned about that.

If you are going to Samana, take a ship tour, there have been very positive reviews. I would not do Samana on my own, just is not worth it, just my opinion.

my wife and i were on the Spirit last Aug for the 8-day eastern itinerary, but PR was not one of the ports. ours were bermuda, tortola, and st. thomas.

then we also did a 1 night CTN in october.

this ship is fabulous. IMO i like the smaller size of the ship. though she's "smaller"...she plays big. the ONLY criticism i have about the spirit is that the Stardust Theater entrances are in front. so its just noticeable when the door opens while the theater is dark.

but she's a beautiful ship. she may be older, but doesn't show her age.

No movie theater on the Spirit. We were on her for 15 days in November. The ship is in great shape other than it had some engine problems after a fire in late November. It is suppose to be fixed at the next drydock Oct 31st.

Thanks for the responses.....A few more questions....I will be getting a balcony room on the 11th deck....do you know if the rooms have a small refridge and safe? I'm almost postive they do, but not sure. Also,on the reply on Samana, DR....What ship tour did you do? I was thinking at Tortola and Samana going to the beach. Any suggestions on Samana and what to do and Tortola?

Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!:o

no frigs in any cabin, other then suites. safes, yes. we took a small folding cooler, the room stewards kept ice in it. if you need a refrig for meds or kids..you can arrange it through the ship coordinator.

In January we did the Cayo Levantado Beach Escape in Samana through the ship. A private tender boat takes you to a nice beach on an island.

In Tortola we tooks Speedy's Ferry on our own to the Virgin Gorda Baths.

I highly recommend both of these excursions.

We enjoy the Spirit........No fridges, unless you require one for medication.....otherwise...bring a small cooler or an inflatable ice-bucket (packs great in the suitcase!!:D) ......the ice bucket they provide is small..

We have done the Baths and Cane Garden Bay in Tortola.....you can't go wrong with either one...just depends if you prefer to do a little walking to the Baths...or just relax on a breathtaking beach, with all you need right there...chairs, food, drinks, water rentals, etc. You even have time to shop in town, with good planning!!:) We are headed back to Cane Garden in just a few weeks!!! We are also doing the Samana Cayo Beach tour through the ship...we heard that you should defintely use the ship for the DR excursions. As for PR.......we arrive in the afternoon and still have no idea what we will be doing...everything closes down by 7 (we have heard) except the restaurants.......so if you have any ideas we would love hearing them too!!!

Have sailed the Dawn twice, but loved the Spirit, too. Beautiful decor. Main differences between Dawn and Spirit: No fridge, no dedicated movie theater, no self-service laundromats, and no Tex-Mex restaurant.

How much one-way can you get? To add just a little, 'cause what you wrote is true; No outdoor dining, no Celebrity Disco, no Bier Garten, no Galaxy of the Stars, and no Amphitheatre on the Dawn.

Each ship provides treats the other does not.

One-way? Huh? Just trying to point out the differences that seem to come up the most or get asked about the most. My pointing out the differences doesn't make the differences bad or my post judgmental. However, I will now state that the differences that mattered to me were no dedicated movie theater (which some people don't care about) and no Tex-Mex restaurant.

The differences that you pointed out may well be true but I don't think they're often brought up. I can say, for certain, that they don't matter to me.

lol ... thanks for adding that. We, too, love the Spirit ... she's in great shape ... been on her 3x ... (and the Dawn 2x ... not that it matters) :D I would recommend looking at the ports section of these boards and researching ... also, hook up w/ others in your roll call ... that's how we found ~30 others to do tours w/ on our 11-night S. Carib. on her 2 years ago.

Good luck ... I'm sure you're enjoy the ship!

Agreed.. We have been on both as well. Each have their "special" qualities. We love the "Observatory" on the Spirit!! It was so relaxing and a great place to just "be"!!

I assume you're referring to the perimeter of the Galaxy to the Stars ... where ("Observatory") I should mention is also a great place to "be" when leaving port when too it's cold outside ... starboard side (of course) ... w/ drink in hand :p And while you're there ... don't forget to visit the "Dragon's Lair" from the circular staircase to the left of the stage to see the bridge.

Also, another "secret" place I like is on deck 8 (starboard side ;) )outside Champagne Charlie's inside the little "nook" w/ the wall of windows ... a little more quiet/private ... and you can get bar service there :D

The Spirit did have a movie Theater, however they turned it into a very small gift shop next to the photo gallery. They do play movies in the showroom sometimes.

Yes, I was referring to the perimeter of the Galaxy.....and yes...... with a drink (or 2) in hand.....(a martini was always nice;) ). The staircase to the bridge was great as well. We will have to check out your "secret" spot behind Champagne Charlie's when we are on, never found that one.......3 WEEKS FROM TODAY!!!!!!!:D We will let you know if we agree!!:)

I've been on 7 cruises and my absolute favorite SHIP is the Spirit (so far ;) )

It is beautiful and well kept. If you want to be fussy, you can see areas of carpeting that are stained/worn. Other than that, the ship looked brand new to me.

I was looking at the piers in NYC using Microsoft Virtual Earth. The photo was probably taken last year. Is that the Spirit at the W. 50th St. pier? There's a smaller ship shown at the W. 52nd St. pier. I wonder which ship that is. It's fun to see the ships from a different view.

My DD and I did the Spririt to the Bahamas last Aprirl during the Hurricane. Loved the ship, not the waves..however once we arrived in Port Canavarel smooth sailing...service was great, loved Windows. always got a great seat with no waiting, Cagneys was wonderful even though we did it the first night and couldn't finish our double order of crab legs..so they wrapped everyting and we put it on ice in our rolling cooler and ate it two days later, cold..yum! Shows were wonderful, we had to access ships doctor and the staff was wonderful and accomadating..liked thecasino. the only thing weird was that we coulding walk on the deck with the pool(don't remember what it was called ) from end to end without going outside..we got wet during the storm..I know we could have gone down and deck and possibly up but it was just a weird design..otherwishe we loved the ship..susan
