Dunn's River Falls on Own? (Cost?Transport?)

We are interested in seeing the falls (with 2 kids 12/6), but were thinking of just going on our own. Is there a fee to 'enter' the falls area - esp. by the beach? What is the best way to get there from the dock? If taxi, what is the approx. cost?

It will cost you $15 per adult and $12.5 per child to enter any place of the falls area .

If you were only adults I would say OK do it on your own. Not with Kids. Take a tour. We use ShoreTrips on most islands and never had a problem.
