There is alot of shopping in Saint John. There is a fashion shopping centre a couple blocks from the ship (Brunswick Square). Any particular items/stores/genre you are looking for?

Probably clothing stores, perfume, shoes, etc. you know "girl stuff":D

P.S. We happen to have a "Brunswick Square" mall in the town I work. Pretty funny.

The clothing and shoe stores in Brunswick Square and Market Square would be more upscale. If you are looking for deals, they may have sale racks where you could find unique items. Perfumes Plus is a perfume store in Brunswick Sq.

They have a tent area right outside the ship with local merchants. A lot of the merchants in the tent also have stores. This is where we purchased clothing items.

What do they sell in the tents? Anything different than we can buy at home?

Canadian stores stock different merchandise than most American stores, though you might find that prices can be higher. We have a few brand names that I haven't seen very often in the US, like President Stone and Parasuco, just to give two examples.

 

We have a number of American chains who have opened in Canada, some more successful than others. Gap, Old Navy, Wal-Mart to name a few. They need to make changes to be successful in Canada. In fact, Wal-Mart Canada stocks some of Target's goods in Canada and uses some different brand names in Canada.

 

Goods are sometimes more regional in Canada. Colours that might sell well in other parts of Canada won't sell in Quebec. It always depends on the size of the city and their particular fashion sense. For example in Montreal you can go from Wal-Mart/Zeller's all the way to Haute Couture and the fashion house of Paris and Milan (not to mention Montreal's own fashion houses).

There was a shop with soaps, bath salts, and perfumes - this shop made up some gift sacks for me. Was also one that did coats, hats, gloves, and scarfs that were a fleece type. There were convenience store things like sofa drinks and snacks. A lot of craft items. I'm sure the merchants in this area could point you in the right direction to find what you are looking for.

Do most of the merchants take our American credit cards?:o

 

Yes, your credit cards are accepted worldwide. Not all merchants will take American Express, and very few would accept diners club or discover.

If they take Discover, it's a tourist trap. Processing of the Discover card is only offered to merchants that do a significant amount of transactions with Americans. It's a pretty good sign that it's a tourist trap.

 

MasterCard and Visa are generally accepted. Debit cards belonging to the NYCE network are accepted. American Express is also accepted though not by as many merchants. And Diner's Club is also accepted by even less merchants.

 

Many American company gift cards will not work properly because they never programmed them to handle multiple currencies.

 

Oh and the one other credit card that works...Sears cards work from country to country as well.
