We had purchased a fancy lighter for a gift and had it confiscated at the FT Lauderdale airport. Can you carry them onboard or do they need to be in the checked luggage now? (this was a couple yrs ago)

as of today- you can carry on lighters. Just check your airlines website to see what can be carried and what needs to be checked. These things change daily.

Princess holds them til he last night.

I'm not aware of this. I was on the CB last week and the wife was able to carryon 3 cartons bought on St. Thomas for $52.00. The only thing that they announced they would hold until the last day was liquor (except wine and champagne).

Can anyone confirm for the OP that Carnival will let you take the cigarettes that you buy on board back to your cabin? Princess wouldn't allow this, they were using the same policy as they do for booze.

Princess does allow cigs to be brought on board.

Normal disposable lighters can be brought on airplanes, just no "jet" or Zippo's that store fuel.

I paid $19 in St. Thomas a few weeks ago.

Cigs here in CO are about $32.

While once true, this has been changed as a result of complaints by Zippo and the traveling public. From the TSA website: In an effort to concentrate resources on detecting explosive threats, TSA will no longer ban common lighters [including Zippos] in carry-on luggage as of August 4, 2007. Torch lighters remain banned in carry-ons.

Thanks for the correction. The pictures they showed in the airport a few weeks ago showed Bic's and similars OK, and had an X through what I though was a Zippo and torch lighters - I must have misinterpreted as TSA's website is pretty clear:

Ok, stupid question from a non-smoker (married to a smoker that will want to know): you can buy cartons of cigarettes rather inexpensively, on the ship...but you can't take them back to your room or smoke them until after you leave the ship?? That really makes no sense to me.

So my husband can only smoke cigs he brings on in his luggage (can he bring multiple packs with no problem?) or that he buys in port? Since the ship sells out of smokes quickly, what do smokers do......just "jones" until they get to the next port?

Again, probably stupid questions...but I'd like to be sure that I won't have to deal with a grumpy hubby having a nic-fit, if I can help it. ;)

I was told you can buy single packs for consumption, just not the cartons. Not sure why they do it that way as the others I've been on you just buy em like anything else. Luckily, I read that before I left and packed accordingly. I did buy some in St. Thomas as I was running low but I didn't mess with buying any on the ship.

yes - $55! My guy is originally from WV - where they are still cheap - we go riding there fairly often - gonna have to fill the saddlebags with em on next trip back!

Oh my goodness . . . . $55 a carton in Maryland? They are $36 here in Virginia.

I smoke and so does my daughter - we did a 9 day in 2005 - we brought aboard enough to make it through the trip.
