Pompeii Shore Excursions

We're booked on the Royal Clipper May 17 sailing in the waters of Southern Italy. Can anyone evaluate the ship-arranged shore excursion from Sorrento to Pompeii? We're wondering whether the guides provided are high-quality, whether the tour is rushed, etc. Is it feasible to get to Pompeii and back independently in the time available ? (Ship is scheduled to leave Sorrento at 3 pm.)

 

Any experience or advice would be welcome.
