skandls Posted May 8, 2008 #2 Share Posted May 8, 2008 We have not cruised with Viking but we did the Avalon/Amadeus Poetry from Budapest to Amsterdam for 14 nights. That was a fabulous trip. We really enjoy cruising on the larger - Voyager and Freedom class ships from Royal Caribbean. We did the Northern Europe cruise on Celebrity's Constellation. So we have some comparisons on what the trips are like. We do like to travel. River cruising is a very different experience from the big cruise ships. We found that we got to see more of the countries we visited than if we had been on a cruise ship. On a river cruise most tours are included - much more time is spent in the towns where you dock. The food is 'better' because there are fewer passengers to feed. There is less choice and dining times are very specific - no snack places on the ship. The entertainment is very minimal with a few local groups coming on board to perform after dinner. There are no casinos or discos on board. River cruising is very interesting - since the rivers were one of the main transportation methods for many years. So there is a lot of history and many cities along the major rivers in Europe. Big ship cruising in Northern Europe - the time in port is limited and you can see only so much of the city when you have to get from the port into 'town'. If you have any questions - let me know. We enjoy both types of cruises.
