Passport question for UK resident

Recommended Posts

Can someone living in the UK help? If you have a British passport do you need it to travel around Europe still? If your on a Med cruise do you need to take a passport with you or is it not needed? (not sure how it works anymore now that its a United states of Europe type thing)

We sail at the end of April and my daughters passport expires at the begining of the following September, so it will only have just over 4 months validity left on it. If we dont need passports then I wont bother getting a new one before we cruise I will deal with it after the cruise when we have a little time in the UK before coming home.

Just wondered if you had to have a minimum of 6 months on your passport before they will let you sail

The answer is No, if you are within the EU.

EG: For Spain your passport just has to be valid - same for any EU country. EU nationals are only required to produce evidence of their EU nationality and identity in order to be admitted to any EU Member State. This evidence can take the form of a valid national passport or national identity card. Either is acceptable. The FCO website states "A valid British passport must be held for entry to and exit from Spain. There is no minimum passport validity requirement but you should ensure that your passport is valid for the proposed period of your stay."

Italy requires that you passport is valid three months beyond length of stay

So you can see it is slightly different for each country, but the 6-month rule certainly does not apply. The 6-month rule seems to be a myth perpetuated by Travel Agents so they do not have to learn the various rules for each specific country IMO

Thanks for your help guys - we are flying into the UK on a military flight so my daughters passport/validity wont be an issue, was just hoping to be able to sail with her passport as it is and deal with renewing it when the cruise is over and we have a bit more time. Looks like we are good to go!

The UK is not fully part of the Schengen Agreement which permits free travel across borders in Europe. You might get out of the country but you'd have huge trouble getting back in.

IMHO you'd be nuts to travel outside of the UK without a valid passport.

Spain require advance notice of traveller information (like the US) this includes passport numbers.
