samiam Posted October 7, 2004 Author #3 Share Posted October 7, 2004 It was all good. We met wonderful people from C.C. and others who never heard of C.C. :) The ship is in great condition. I was on her last year too. She is well kept. We made it to all three ports. :) We took the "Virgin Gorda" tour to the Baths. It was awesome!!! Food, waiters, cabin steward, were all great. I have nothing bad to say...well, getting off (disembarking) wasn't fun, but that never is. :) Have a great cruise!
herb Posted October 7, 2004 #4 Share Posted October 7, 2004 Glad you enjoyed your cruise. We too would like to take the Virgin Gorda Baths tour. Have heard only nice things about it. My question...what did you do in San Juan? I know the ship only arrives in afternoon; what did that leave you time to do? Any idea how others spent their time there?? samiam Posted October 7, 2004 Author #5 Share Posted October 7, 2004 San Juan...we just walked around. You dock at Old San Juan and just walk up the street to see shops, restaurants, an old fort, churches, etc. Then we headed back to the ship for dinner. Seemed like lots of people had their dinner in San Juan, not on the ship. After dinner we went to Senor Frogs! YIKES, I was too old for that! lol But it was fun. Seemed like many people took taxi/bus tours for only $5-$10 dollars and enjoyed that. At the end of the pier there are many taxis and buses waiting to take you wherever you want to go. Just tell them you'd like a tour of 1 hour, 2 hours, whatever and they will give you a price. The Baths at Virgin Gorda were absolutely beautiful! We did the ship's tour because we were concerned about getting back in time. It was worth the $79 for the peace of mind, knowing we wouldn't miss the ship. Enjoy your cruise! ~Sam
luvs2beachit Posted October 7, 2004 #6 Share Posted October 7, 2004 Hi Sam and all, We also just returned from the Legend 9/28 cruise and our experience was great too. One of the highlights was meeting up with the people from CC. Putting a face on the folks we had been chatting with for weeks before the cruise. This was our first cruise on Carnival but not our first cruise. I had stayed away from Carnival because of the stories I had heard about it being a "booze cruise" and "wild". Well, it wasn't.....it was fun and interesting. We only had one minor problem, our waiter. He was surly and indifferent. Seemed like we were bothering him when asking questions or placing our order. So, the next night we saw the dining room captain and had our table changed to a wonderful waiter. While we were conversing with the diningroom captain the waiter came up and started to questioning us about what we were doing. I told him we were changing tables because of his attitude and indifference. He started to say something but the captain sent him away. Later we heard that someone else from the same seating area also had a similar problem and had their table changed. We are not absolutely sure it was the same waiter but it sure sounded like it was. Other than that everything else was fine. The Golden Fleece restaurant is a must do. The food, the service and the ambiance was outstanding. Our cabin stewart was wonderful. Tipped him a twenty in the beginning and he took care of everything, including getting us a lounge chair for our balcony and double sheeting our bed blanket. We don't usually take ship tours but we were with another couple who had never cruised before so we went along with what they wanted to do and it all worked out nicely. In San Juan we went too the Rain Forest....the guide was not good but the forest was beautiful. In St Thomas we did the Atlantis Submarine and that was fabulous. In Tortola we did the baths and they are not to be missed. The casino was very good to me........I hit a jackpot twice!! The food in the Unicorn was ok, not great, but familiar........you have seen it on your local buffet. The diningroom was better. The pizza was very good and the ice cream was 24hrs. Initially, I thought the decor was gaudy, but it seems to grow on you once you really take the time to look at the murials and paintings. We never really had a problem getting a deck chair, at least at the aft pool which is "adults only". And we did actually see security enforce the "no children in the pool" rule, not once but twice. In other areas of the ship we never felt crowded, as a matter of fact, many of the lounges and sitting areas were often deserted. Leaving and entering NY harbor is a breathtaking experience...... Embarkation was a horror show, debarkation was not as bad as we anticipated. All in all, a great cruise........having an extra day was a major benifit.....we would go on the Legend again without any concerns. Judie

glrounds Posted October 8, 2004 #10 Share Posted October 8, 2004 Hi Sam, Last saw you at the pier "wishing" for a cab. Wasn't that a zoo ? The worst embarkation and debarkation ever for me. It seemed like no one knew what they were doing. Probably due to the fact that Carnival doesn't port here year around. Hastily put together land crew. Oh well. Really enjoyed the cruise and meeting everybody in the lounge. Sorry I didn't make any of the other ones. I can't keep places and times straight on a cruise ship. I now wish I had taken the baths excursion. So many raved about it. :(
samiam Posted October 8, 2004 Author #11 Share Posted October 8, 2004 Hi Gary....it was nice meeting you on our cruise. Yeah, the Baths tour was awesome! It was just so beautiful...really breath-taking. I can't wait to print out my pictures. N.Y. pier is always chaos...no matter what day, what line, what ship. You just need to go with it. And we were the only ship in that day. I've been there when there are 3 or 4 ships in. Now that's an experience! :) ~Sam
mar5762 Posted October 8, 2004 #12 Share Posted October 8, 2004 Hello everyone Glad to hear you had a great time! I leave on the 14th on the Legend with a group of 30 and really looking forward to it. I'm also looking forward to meeting a few girls I've been chatting with on here. It's a cool place to meet people. My question for you: The baths seem to be a must do. Did anyone try to do it without going through the ship excursion? I know on past cruises I've saved a lot of money by doing things on my own. Thanks!
samiam Posted October 8, 2004 Author #13 Share Posted October 8, 2004 mar5762...look in the "ports" section under "Caribbean-other" and you'll see that other people have done the Baths on their own. They will give you a better idea of how long it takes to get there and back and the cost. Since the Legend was due to set sail early, I didn't want to take the chance of not getting back in time. I believe if you do it on your own you have to take a taxi to the ferry landing...take a ferry...then another taxi to the Baths. On the ship's excursion, we boarded a ferry boat right at the pier where we were docked. That took us over to Virgin Gorda where open buses were waiting to drive us to the Baths and back again. It was very convenient...though it did cost $79 per person. Whatever you decide, you will LOVE the Baths. The are absolutely gorgeous! ~Sam
mar5762 Posted October 9, 2004 #14 Share Posted October 9, 2004 Thanks Sam, I appreciate the information. I did find info on another post where some have done it on their own. Sounds like maybe the convenience and peace of mind are worth the extra money. Thanks again! Marrianne
luvs2beachit Posted October 9, 2004 #15 Share Posted October 9, 2004 Hi Nancy, It was equally as niice meeting with you and your lovely daughter. I am wondering why we haven't heard from Rosie or Jo or John or Cathy and Brad. I hope they all got home ok. Mar5762........We also usually do tours on our own and not through the ship because the cost is so much more, however, because of the limited time we were docked in Tortola we opted for the ship tour just to be on the safe side. The ship will wait for it's own tour but not for private ones. Samiam is right, check out the local offerings but the convience of leaving from the pier and the assurance that we won't miss the ship was worth the extra money for us. redcasey Posted October 9, 2004 #17 Share Posted October 9, 2004 John,Kathy and Barbara were all home by noon of that day.We too had a great time and a lot of it was because of the wonderful people we met thru Cruise Critic. Our sail away party,in spite of the rain and fog,was a good time. The leis were a good idea and Sams bubbles added a good touch. Our farewell cocktail was also nice and having them meeting a couple who attended the same high schools as Kathy and myself was something. We really had a great time and thanks to Rosie,Jo,Sam.Jan.Judie.Cathy Bert.and everyone, just for being there. cathyp1216 Posted October 11, 2004 #19 Share Posted October 11, 2004 Brad and I will definately be looking for another September cruise next year. It was wonderful meeting everyone. My sister plans are going with us next year, as well as, a co-worker. I'll start looking after tax season is over. Unless someone knows of a great deal now! Getting off the ship was a nightmare, I don't ever remember taking that long before. We arrived home about 6 p.m. I am still trying to catch up.
