Newport & Bar Harbour

Does anyone know where the ships dock? Is it possible to walk around these towns in the morning and make it back to the ship with ease for an afternoon excursion?

Thanks :)

except for the smaller ships(really small) these are both tender ports. The excursion will be on the land anyway. You'll just have to make arrangement to meet it where the tender docks.

Not sure where the tenders drop you off in Newport. If it's anywhere within walking distance to the Brick Market Place you can easily make a day of walking around that area. Lot's of shopping and food. If you wanted to go to the mansions, you should be able to use a bus or taxi. I'm only 20 mins from Newport so if there is anything I can do, let me know.

smeyer, I wouold not want to meet on the pier, I would want to be ack on the ship to meet the excursion in the Princes Theatre or wherever. Tendering will be a pain, I forgot about that.

tendering in New Port took a lot of time...lines of up to 2 hours. While I agree I too prefer to meet on the ship the choice of 4 hours back and forth as opposed to waiting on land is easy for me. why would you want to go back to wait to tender again when you can easily meet them when they get off the ship is really beyond me.

HI Mike 91911,

We are sailing on the Caribbean Princes this Sept 14, We would like to see the mansions. Would you suggest to rent a car, if so are there any rentals near the pier?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Charlotte:)

When we go to Neport for the day we usually park the car and walk around by the Brick Marketplace. So no I do not suggest you rent a car. The only exception is if you want to do the "12 mile drive". That is a big circle that goes by the mansions, Brenton Reef and other scenic places on the coastline. I've never looked into it but I bet you could find some sort of tour that will do all that anyway. Check out the link below. Pay particular attention to the part about the Trolley Rte. 67. That does the Mansions year round. I don't know where you are tendered to but my guess is it would be within walking distance to where you would catch the trolley. The link by the way is for the Rhode Island Public Trans. Authority. (RIPTA).

and also some local tours:

I found those using a google search for "newport tours".

But I still think the RIPTA trolley is the way to go for the mansions. Most of them you can walk from one to the other. It's a beautiful section of Newport.

Then the trolley would definately work for going to the mansions. Plus there is lot's of shopping and eating options in that area. My guess is for a person who has never been to Newport, the Mansions area a definate draw. I should clean up the minivan and start a cruise tour excursion. Seriously though, living here, you tend to forget how much beauty and history there is right in your back yard.

Thank you, Mike91911 and Smeyer 418,

That sounds nice and easy to take the trolley. Just right for us. I can't wait.

No problem! I'll have to look at Princess website and find the days they have ships in Newport. I'd love to take some pictures. I hope you have a great time in our small but beautiful state!
