Sydney -what would you do?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

We are renting a car in Sydney in June. We have two options and 8 hours in port. First option - drive up the eastern half of the Cabot Trail and turning around in Igonish or Neil's Harbor. OR Drive the Bras D'or Lake area for the day. What would you do??? I hear that the scenery is spectacular in both places.

We have done both and they each have some spectacular views and we enjoyed both. I thought the eastern part Cabot Trail was better, but we were lucky to have a sunny day. I would do the Bras D'or if the weather were cloudy or foggy rather than the trail. Just my opinion others may have more experience.

Having lived in the area for most of my life, I would agree with this. The drive to that part of the Cabot Trail is very nice but if it is foggy you can't see much.

We are traveling with a family group of 6. All adults (at least by age).

What is the best way, considering price, to get to and from the Fortress?

We will dock at 8 AM and leave at 5 PM so we should have plenty of time.

Other options of things to do in Sydney?

Bill - Sydney has several small museums, and a casino. There is a Main St. with shops which is pleasant for strolling.

The Fortress of Louisbourg is approx. 22 mi. from Sydney. Have you considered renting a car for the day?

Outside of Sydney, there is the Fortress, Baddeck and of course the Cabot Trail.

Thanks Linda. That may be the best way. Our group has a couple of backseat drivers, may not be a politically viable solution, but I appreciate the advice.

Hi -

We are also renting a car in Sydney on July 7 ... and we plan to go to the Fortress of Louisbourg. I didn't realize it was only 22 miles. What else would you recommend that we see during our short 7 hour stay?

Are there some great places to eat in Louisbourg? Any "don't mis this" sites?

Thanks for any additional information you can provide!

Liz

You can spend the day at the Fortress. You can also eat at the Fortress. Last time I was there you had to eat with just a spoon. I traded my wife for a Vicking hat. The only problem was she couldn't cook so they gave her back.

It's a fun day.

Also check on the Schedule of Sailing Tall ship "The Blue NoseII". Last time I was in Sydney in July the Blue Nose was in port and you can book a sailing tour on it.
