babywewe Posted May 17, 2008 #1 Share Posted May 17, 2008 I was wondering what part of the staff can use guest services. I saw many of the staff at the clubs, bars, and at the gym. It usually seemed like upper level staff? Just wondering how this worked.
misguidedangel Posted May 17, 2008 #2 Share Posted May 17, 2008 The staff have access to all facilties, they just have to have the ID on to show they are staff. I saw staff on the jogging track regularly working out. You can't force the staff to stay in the staff areas below deck, many would never see the light of day all week, for those that work below decks. TEXASMUNK Posted May 17, 2008 #3 Share Posted May 17, 2008 Officers, entertainment, management. You will not see your waiter or bartender or cabin steward in the cigar bar using the spa, etc. Yes, you will see some folks, that that is the upper tier of the crew. yst347 Posted May 17, 2008 #4 Share Posted May 17, 2008 The crew/staff/officers hierachy works like this... Crew crewmembers are the hearbeat of the ships, the most hardworking employees... housekeeping, waiters, bar staff, hotel stewards, cleaners, painters, tradesmen (plumbers, electricians, joiners etc). They can only go into guest areas to work, if they want guest area priveleges (they want to go the disco on a formal night for example) they have to apply through their supervisor or dept head to the staff captain who will approve or decline the request. I have seen bartenders and stewards with guest area priveleges but this is usually for one evening and is on merit. Crewmembers can also only eat in the crew mess and are to stay in crew areas when off duty. They are allowed out into the ports of call providing they are not working. Staff Staffmembers are the hospitality, entertainment & sub-contracted staff which include... (pursers, shore-ex, photographers, IS managers, singers, dancers, DJs WAHOOOOOOO, Karaoke, club 02 & social hosts, CD, ACD, art auctioneers, steiners (spa), gift shop. Staff members have guest area priveleges and we are allowed to bars, to watch the shows & to eat on Lido at lunchtimes. Guests always come first, we have to make sure we are not impeding on any guests whilst in guest areas and are not allowed to join any lines on lido... also we're not allowed to sit on bar stools (even if the bar is empty... still don't quite understand that one?) Staffmembers are allowed to eat in the crew mess or the staff mess and are allowed out in the ports of call providing they are not working. Officers Officers are pretty much the same as staff, same priveleges etc. Officers have to wear their formal uniform whenever they are in guest areas. The only extra priveleges officers get is their own dining room with their own made to order menu... and they are aloowed in the casino if they have family sailing where crew & staff are not. Officers cannot gamble in the casino but they can accompany family into the casino. There is only one crew bar (2 on destiny class ships) and there is no hierachy in the crew bar, crew, staff & officers are all allowed in there
pungo3 Posted May 17, 2008 #5 Share Posted May 17, 2008 On some ships, they have their own 'entertainment' (pool, hot tub, bar, etc.) Since they live on the ship, they can't spend 24 hours a day working. They need some downtime. However, they will never intrude on the paying passengers.

It usually seemed like upper level staff? Just wondering how this worked. When we were on the Fascination last year. I was strolling around the ship after hours and noticed the gym was full crew members working out. The gym had already closed to the passengers. I just assumed they had full run of the gym after passenger hours.
Quench Posted May 18, 2008 #7 Share Posted May 18, 2008 When I cruised years ago on the Holiday, the staff were not allowed to dance in the Disco either.
sk8rpatty Posted May 18, 2008 #8 Share Posted May 18, 2008 ... also we're not allowed to sit on bar stools (even if the bar is empty... still don't quite understand that one?) I always thought that one was strange too. My friend (entertainment staff) would have to stand behind me if I was having a drink at the bar...even when empty. So I didn't spend too much time on barstools when I was visiting him.

Jayne315 Posted May 19, 2008 #10 Share Posted May 19, 2008 When I was on the Valor in January there were the same 3 Carnival staff members at the pool everyday. I feel they should use their own pool on Sea Days....they used 3 chair directly in front of the pool on each of these days. What about us "paying customers"! They must have only worked at night because they were there for the entire day.
