Mariner - In room internet access???

Can anyone who was recently on the Mariner tell me if in-room internet access is available (for a fee, of course)? I thought I heard that it was, but the RCCL website does not have the Mariner listed as one of the ships with this type of access. Also, if anyone knows, can you reserve this feature ahead of time (if it is available, that is)?

Yes, they do. I think you can reserve one once you embark (about $100/7 days). However, if you expect high speed internet access, you will be disappointed. [img]http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif[/img]

Yes, I was on the Mariner last week. In room access is available for a flat fee of $100 (for the 7 day cruises).

I didn't use it since the Internet Access computers were literally just outside my room (deck 8). Internet Access is available for 50 cents per minute for those who are trying to get away from work and doin't need in-room access. I have never had a laptop until this year and was thinking about doing the in-room deal. The only thing I am worried about is will I get the use out of it. It will be our first RCI cruise- we have cruised DCL 5 times and I remember our first couple of cruises as crazy hectic since everything was new to us and we didn't know our way around the ship. I am not sure how it will be for this trip since I have studied the map of the ship. Any thoughts?

So unless you need it for work or files
Average email is apx 5 minutes or $2.50
Uses for laptop Plane Ride,looking At photos and coping friends pictures,etc

The Cybercabin internet hook up is considerably slower than you are used to at home, however it was fast enough for me to post dozens of pics to Cruise Critic right from the cabin....

We used it mainly to hear from DH's office on 3/7. When we went to the purser's office she really tried to talk us out of it saying if Co. had firewalls we wouldn't be able to pick up mail and AOL was almost unusable because it was so slow. Well we tried it and it worked great, never any problems easy hook up. The only inconvenience was the telephone hook up is on one wall and the plug on another so when we were on line there were wires everywhere, small inconvenience.

I was also just on the mariner last week and I did the inroom hookup and I also have AOL, we had no problems at all, we sent pictures, downloaded files, etc, I needed it for work, and personally find it much easier to have it in the cabin

If you do this and bring your own laptop, do you bring your own LAN cable or do they supply one?

Anne,

The connection is via a phone line so you will need a modem installed in your laptop. They supply all the cables and it is a simple dial-up networking connection. A LAN connection would have been nice but I guess they want to keep the conncection method the same on all ships.

OK, let me get this straight. For $100 a week, I can have unlimited dialup access on my laptop in my stateroom. Where do I dial to? A shipboard number?

Yes, $100 a week for unlimited access. On the Explorer and the Mariner the phone no. is 60 with no password required.

For anyone who has to stay connected because of work this is a bargain. Did it last year on the AOS. Keep up on all e-mails and in touch with the office via instant messaging (never had to call home/office). Remember if it is used for business purposes it can be deductible.
