Taxi, definitely. Easier, safer, more convenient. If you are going to be staying there a while, arrange for a time to have the taxi to come back to get you.

If you have a designated driver (that's usually me), a rental car will give you more flexability. There are four or five really nice places on the east coast. We have been to Mexcalitos, Coconuts, Chen Rio and another place (can't remember the name) on the south end of the east coast. It's also nice just to pull off the road and walk along a deserted beach.

Well if you are going to rent a car, then you really, REALLY should get the Cozumel Map.
