Toyz711 Posted June 20, 2008 #3 Share Posted June 20, 2008 when are you going? if you haven't yet, check out the glacier cam for mendenhall. http://www.fs.fed.us/r10/tongass/districts/mendenhall/ you view the glacier from across the lake...just dress for the normal day tmeps. if you aren't hiking the trails, normal walking shoes are fine. don't need a really heavy coat anytime...layers work better then heavy coats. just make sure you have a rain poncho, for the "just in case". alcpa1 Posted June 20, 2008 #4 Share Posted June 20, 2008 Layer and prepare for light rain and you will be set. Make sure your shoes will do well on uneven surfaces that may be wet and slippery. You will love every step!
Fredr Posted June 20, 2008 #5 Share Posted June 20, 2008 Do you need any special shoes if you are going to Mendenhall glacier on your own (ie without a tour group) ?Do you need a heavy coat ??? Hello, If you are a hiker and it isn't raining or wet, climb the East loop Trail at Mendenhall Glacier. This is a real treat, especially the views from the top of the trail overlooking the glacier and views of the Alaskan Wilderness. A heavy sweatshirt shoudl keep you warm but remember that in Jjuly and August this area can get temperatures in the 70s and evn the low 80s.
