Scrambled Eggs and grits

I know - why get scrambled eggs when you can get an omelet? The answer is that I like scrambled eggs - just not the ones I had on the Jewel from the buffet. I did a search and found many complaints about the scrambled eggs. If I ordered scrambled eggs in the main dining room instead of the buffet, would they be the real thing or would they be the egg product also? If I requested (in the dining room) that they fix freshly scrambled eggs made from an actual egg, would I get the real thing?

 

Also, for fellow southerners: The pot I saw on the Jewel labeled "Grits" looked like hot milk. I didn't try them because it didn't look like anything I'd call grits. Has anyone had traditional southern style grits, and, if so, were they the ones served on the buffet?

 

I don't fix a full breakfast at home, so I enjoy an old fashioned southern style breakfast when we're on vacation.

LOL.. we are from the glorious South as well, and we laughed when we read your posting because when we saw the "grits' we were like.. "Ok.. those are something, but grits they are not.." LOL..

 

On our last cruise we ate breakfast in Cagney's every day except one day had it delivered to our stateroom and if they were fake eggs, we couldn't tell. The cruise we were on last november we actually LOVED the eggs they had on the buffet. They were very soft scrambled, just how we like them. I wish I could actually answer your question, but I did have to tell you that you made us chuckle. It is nice to know we aren't the only ones who wondered if these people had ever eaten grits made the Southern way.

 

Really, for us, it was the same with their TexMex restaurant. When we were eating there we were like.."Ok.. have these people ever had real TexMex?" Being from Texas we are spoiled to GREAT TexMex. I knew we were in trouble when we sat down at the TexMex restaurant and were served round tortillia chips and bottled salsa. LOL

Yeah. Carnival is the only line that did have a good southern style breakfast - including grits. Our first cruise was on Carnival because we could drive to New Orleans. We fell in love with cruising but not with Carnival, so haven't gone on Carnival again. Breakfast is the only thing that they did better than either Princess or NCL.

On the Gem the omelet action stations also made eggs to order. You could could get real eggs prepared any way you wanted. I doubt you could ever get mass prepared grits to be right but they did have pretty good biscuits and sausage gravy another southern tradition.

I agree that the scrambled eggs were good (we were on the Pearl). If they were powdered, I would be surprised. We looked for but didn't find any grits, although a fellow cruiser who posts here tells me they had them.

 

I also have to agree with you on the TexMex as well. I truly believe that you can only get good TexMex in Texas.

You know what.. believe it or not.. until two years ago I would have agreed with you.. Thanksgiving two years ago we went to New Mexico for a week or so.. Stayed in beautiful Red River in a condo, but would drive down into Taos to the casino. We actually at at a Mexican restaurant that was to me, Tex Mex and it was out of this world.

 

Last year we went to Yellowstone for 8 days. We stayed in Teton Village and would drive into Jackson for dinner on occasion. There is a TexMex there .. called Three Pigs or something like that.. OH MY GOSH it was as good or better than we get here in Dallas. However.. that isn't the best example to give because the owners/operators/and most of the waitstaff were all from Dallas..LOL

Golly, we were on the Jewel and I really believe the eggs were real.

 

I mean, I saw the cook chasing a chicken, cleaver in hand, around the Buffet Section, under and over the tables, out onto the deck and back through the Buffet. I think he was trying to get the eggs.

 

By the way, the chicken soup was REAL good next day.

I was on the Pearly June 1. They had grits which I had to add a lil salt, butter and cheese to my liking and they were almost like home! Good enough to satisfy my Georgia taste. I did not care for the scramble eggs so I settle for the omelet which was great!

You can get made-to-order eggs at the omelet station....to your liking. As for grits? I've had some that were good but most I wouldn't touch.

Linda - I can tell you from experience, don't order the biscuits and gravy expecting a good old Southern dining experience!!:eek: There was something that kinda looked like a biscuits and there was something kinda liquid on them but it certainly WASN'T biscuits and gravy like I grew up with and still enjoy!

My last meal before a cruise and my first meal when I get back home in Dallas is TexMex! I gotta have my fix.

 

Homemade salsa is soooo easy to make, so are fresh chips. I just don't get the tostitos and Pace thing NCL has going on.

 

But the Il Popo they serve almost makes up for it.

the wife and I was on the Sun a couple years ago, and me being for the DEEP south, i saw what looked like "grits", and after i got them and fixed them the way i like them, tons of butter and salt, and had a bite, well, you know, nothing can beat a good old southern home made grits and eggs, may try them again on the star this november.

It would have to be cheaper to make it on board!

 

But now that you mention it....

 

Wonder where NCL gets their "salmonella-fee" tomatoes?????

Please can someone tell me what 'grits' are?? I've seen them mentioned several times. What would the English equivalent be?, if there is one:confused:
