Deer Mountain Tribal Hatchery on your own

Has anyone been there and done the activities there are your own away from the cruise excursions? I see according to Frommers that it's $9 for admission and kids 12 and under are free. Is this correct? How far is it from the ships? Need a taxi? There are a couple excursions that go there, but most stop at the Totem place and are really expensive, so that doesn't interest me all that much.

Any other information from those who took an excursion or did it on your own is appreciated.

$9 is correct. Is is a fairly easy walk from the ship. We walked to the salmon ladder and it was a little past that. The guide was great and the tour was informative. They also have 2 bald eagles. We bought the combo ticket at the hatchery for $12 that included the hatchery and the Totem Blight museum that is within a block.
