Cruising out of NY....chilly on ship at night?

Recommended Posts

Hey all! Total newbie here. Never cruised in my life and we will be going on our first cruise next mo! Woo Hoo! There's ALOT I don't know and am learning by reading CC and by posting my many posts around here as well. LOL

Anyway, Aug. 24th our ship leaves to head out to Bermuda. I'm trying to buy some new clothes that I think my daughters may need, etc. But I don't know if the ship will be chilly at night when we leave? Is it ok to wear shorts outside on the ship, or pants? I just don't know what to expect...like if there's going to be a "chill" in the air when on the ship outside? or will it feel like summer out on the ship as well when we leave? Help! I know this question probably sounds so obvious to you veteran cruisers, but I really don't know. Not sure if I need to pack pants or capris for them (or even a sweater??).....?

Your help is much appreciated. Thanks so much for bearing w/ my "silly" question. :)

It will feel the same as if you were to go out on a boat in NJ in the evening on August 24.

Thanks for your help. haha, That's the thing....the problem is I've never even been on a boat, any boat, at all. So I really have no idea as to how it will feel. Will there be a "chill" in the air as we're leaving NY at night?? or will it feel warm even though there will be a wind, I'm assuming, as the boat is cruising. Sorry to sound so ignorant...but I really don't know. Not sure if it's okay for shorts to be worn or something longer....or sweater or no sweater, as it's taking off from NY in the evening?? Gosh, I know I really sound stupid. But I really don't know...especially when I've never been on any type of boat. That's why I asked cuz I really have no clue. LOL

Oh, so sorry. No offense. Had no idea you've never been on the water, since you're from NJ I just assumed...my bad. :o

When the ship is moving, there will be a breeze of course, but it should be a very warm breeze. As you head south, it will become even warmer. If you have any concerns, just pack a very lightweight sweater to throw over your shoulders or even a long or 3/4 sleeve top, you'll be fine. Unless you're always cold, you should be fine in shorts if you're on deck. Now, the interior of the ship may be a little chilly from the ac.

You'll be fine. Have a ball on your first cruise! ;)

You should worry less about the temperature and more about the rough seas. You are going right in the middle of hurricaine season. Bring lots of seasickness pills.

Well, I was "curious" about the temp so I know what I need to pack for my little girlies...not "worried" at all. To be honest, hurricane season never "worried" me. We've done all our vacations during hurricane season. Lots of other pple do too, and I just have never worried about that. ;)

Yes, I already have planned on bringing non-drowsy dramamine or bonine. Just as a precautionary meaure. Again, not worrying about seasickness either too much, as I'll go w/ the flow and not get myself sick (no pun intended) over whether I'll get seasick or not (as what I've been told from veterans on here). I'm hoping I'll be fine since we're midship. BUt you never know...and can only hope for the best. When planning a vacation or first time cruise, I don't like to worry about anything. Full of curiosity, but never worries. :) Looking much forward to upcoming vacations. :)

  • 1 month later...

I 've lived in NJ all my life, been on 3 cruises out of NJ/NY and owned a boat for many years. Here's the thing.....you just never know what the temps are going to feel like out on deck. I always pack a cardigan or sweatjacket or sweatshirt and a pair of jeans. Most of the time we have needed the sweater at least once.
