Nassau and Freeport - infant friendly excursions

Hi all,

Looking to do excursions (on our own or through a company...doesn't really matter). It will be 5 of us ( 4 in late 20's and a 16 month old). We are looking for a nice beach in Nassau that we could go to and hang out. My husband and I have been to Cabbage Beach before but there are no facilities there are we need that this time as we are traveling with our son. So I guess that is the one nessecity that we need. Here are some options I have come up with:

1. day Pass at British Colonial Hilton - walking distance but what is the beach area like?? It is as beautiful and lush and as soft as Cabbage Beach?

2. Day Pass at Sheraton/Wyndham Cable Beach - downside is having to take a cab there. Will there be anywhere that we could store the car seat while we are using their facilities? Beach Area...what's it like?

3. Take a $35/person excursion through the ship to Blackbeard's Cay for use of it's beach and facilities. Is it worth it? What is the beach area like?

I have no idea what to do in Freeport... is the Port Lucaya Marketplace and International Bazaar next to each other???

Thanks for your help. I am posting this on the bahamas board as well to see what response I get back from there.

We took public transportation ($1 each, I think) to the Wyndam with our 17-month old in February. It was perfect. We didn't take a car seat, but had her in a Baby Bjorn on the bus. The pool was too cool for her but she had a blast playing on the beach with sand toys, and had an awesome nap on the hammocks with Dad.

The beaches and shopping for Freeport are about a 20 minute taxi ride. The beach is pretty nice but if we were to go back to Freeport we would probably just stay on the ship. We didn't think it was worth the hassel with our 2 and 3 year old. Nassau is really nice, but can be crowded, so a stroller might be hard to navigate if you wanted to walk arounf the town. I would suggest just getting out there and catching a taxi to Cable Beach or Paradise Island, although Cabbage Beach is really nice as well.

How did you find the public transportation? Was there a lot of locals or mostly tourists? Also how much were your day passes?

Thanks,

KT

Across from the straw market you catch the number 10 bus. It will take you to cable beach for $1.00 each. You can catch this bus both ways about every 5 minutes maybe even less, so no worries. The ride from the port is only 10 minutes. Cable beach will be perfect for what you are looking for. Active beach and ammenities, nice restaurants, nice hotels even a casino if you desire. I go to Nassau all the time so I can assure you it is hassle free and a cab is a colossal waist of money.

We took a ferry ride to Atlantis with an 11 month old. Once there, we walked to the free/public beach and rented an umbrella for the day. We are going again in October - DS will be 17 months old. We may try the British Colonial Inn next.

We have been several times to Grand Bahama for a "land vacation" and had a wonderful time. I would do a search on google for Paradise Cove. They have a wonderful beach with facilities very close to the port with food, drinks etc. and you can snorkel right off the shore to some beautiful reefs. You can rent the gear if you don't bring your own. I believe they even have a "tour" where they can pick you up from your location...so I bet they will pick you up from the ship, if you contact them ahead of time. This is much closer than Port Lucaya. ;)

We love Grand Bahama! Have a great time!

We've always stayed in the area of Freeport/Port Lucaya on our trips and drove over to the West End for a day or two at Paradise Cove. It's a very unique place where you can see the reefs right off the shore and easy to swim to. It's privately owned and has food (burgers and such) and drinks that you can order. Swim around a bit.....get out and have some lunch.....go back in and explore some more. A really nice, relaxing day!

As far as I am aware, there is nothing directly at the port where the ships dock. The only other option is to take a cab to the Port Lucaya area where the beach is beautiful, shopping is available, and plenty of restaurants......but not much in the way of reefs. For only having one day, Paradise Cove is the way to go.

If I can be of any more assistance, let me know. Have a great time!
