Tulum on our own?

This will be my mine and my husband's first cruise. Has anyone done Tulum on their own? We think that we can and save alot of money, any tips, tricks, directions or warnings?? All suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Since this is the Cozumel forum, I assume you're porting there. Tulum from Cozumel is long and time-consuming, though doable if you have a long day in port.

Cozumel's an island -- Tulum is on the mainland, about 30 miles or so south of Playa del Carmen, where you'd likely land after ferrying from Coz. So count on 2-3 hours travel each way, even with a car rental, because the ferry itself will take an hour or more.

and the ones it references, will give you all the information you need for a do-it-yourself tour of Tulum. It can definitely be done. It's easier, of course, if you have a long stay in Cozumel, or are stopping on the mainland.

Four of us did Tulem on our own last year. It was much cheaper than the tours from the ship. The ferry runs on the hour and then you can grab a cab to Tulem. Don't take the "Chicken Bus". The driver will wait for you until your ready to return. I think the cab was about $90.00 for the 4 of us. Once there you can basically just hang near the end of one of the many tours going on if you care to listen to the guides. You can also pay for a guide. Watch out for people selling time shares where the ferry is. Tulem was a long ride but it's a beutiful place.
