telephone calls to north america from northern european ports

We purchased a phone and a card for Europe and planned on using it. In the five weeks we were there used four times. We enjoyed going to the internet cafes and emailing. Were able to talk to so many more people. The cafes are inexpensive. Also the kids were able to talk to their friends this way. Five computers going for half an hour cost less than ten dollars! Ships internet was a waste of time(SLOW and EXPENSIVE)

On every cruise ship there is a small side business run by several Filipinos. These gents have Asian mobile telephones with very low roaming charges.

They can usually be found on the pier outside the ship.

Crewmembers who are too poor to purchase thier own telephones borrow the mobiles and make their calls home. The operator then tells the owners of the telephones how much the call actually cost. The telephone owners then charge the callers cash (plus a bit extra) for the call.

Asian mobiles usually roam for betweeen 5 cents and 50 cents per minute.

This service isn't supposed to be offered to passengers, but you could certainly take advantage of it.
