webway67 Posted November 26, 2008 #51 Share Posted November 26, 2008 How is the water temperature in January??? read somewhere it was around 70 degrees??? That sounds cold enough for a wet suit. Do you actually get to "sail" on the Sand Dollar or does it just "motor" around???
travel_mom_1 Posted November 26, 2008 #52 Share Posted November 26, 2008 I can answer one of your questions. On our snorkel trip with Sand Dollar we sailed out to the snorkel spot and then sailed back. Of course, the sailing depends on having sufficient winds. Tony said if we couldn't sail back he would take us to another spot where we could look for sand dollars.
webway67 Posted November 26, 2008 #53 Share Posted November 26, 2008 Thanks Stephanie!! I think I have asked this about 10 times all over the place. now if I can find out if I am going to freeze, I'll be all set:)
zubee23 Posted November 26, 2008 #54 Share Posted November 26, 2008 Water can be pretty chilly in January. The water temp is pretty much how it would be in West Palm, FL in January. If you're comfortable swimming there at that time, then you're okay. Otherwise, if you don't have luggage constraints and have a wetsuit, I'd bring it. gottago2mexico Posted November 26, 2008 #55 Share Posted November 26, 2008 Plan on water temps around 75 degrees. Not cold, just cool, and plenty good enough to go snorkeling. It's about that now, and I just went snorkeling today, for about 2 hours before I got a little chilly.

I swam for about a half hour, like a swimming pool.
texasrosebud Posted January 9, 2009 #61 Share Posted January 9, 2009 $27.00 I noticed that you said that it would cost around $27 for two to go to Port Lucaya and the next person on the boards said $5 each way. Would you please clarify this for me? Thank you!

Would you please clarify this for me? Thank you! Sure! It's $27 for a private cab to take you to Port Lucaya. $5 per person is the cost for the shared bus that goes in there. 232271 Posted January 9, 2009 #63 Share Posted January 9, 2009 For those who say to stay on the ship in Freeport - your nuts. This was one of the the best island days we have had in years. Started by taking a taxi over to Port Lucaya where we met up with our snorkel/sailing excursion - we pre-booked Capt. Tony and the Sundollar...great boat, and wonderful people. He took us out to the reefs where we snorkeled for about an hour or so - so many fish, and a very good variety....then went on an hour sail. BEAUTIFUL. The boat takes about 30 ppl, but my family (Mom, Dad and 6 yr old twins) were the only ones on board that morning...we felt like billionairs. Many would have canceled the trip for lack of cuswtomers...but Capt. Tony told me straight out - you reserved a spot, I'll take you out. If you are interested in a 3 hour tour, contact him. Then we walked across the street and had lunch on the beach at Billy Joe's...met the myth himself! Kids loved him. Had the conch salad, and a grilled conch....delish! Kids swam out to the water tramploine and had a blast. Then we walked over to the Sheraton...by this time it was around 3PM...so no one was checking braclelets...swam in the pool for an hour or so, and then back to the ship. It was truly a great day on GBI. which location was the water trampoline at??
bobsfamily Posted January 9, 2009 #64 Share Posted January 9, 2009 which location was the water trampoline at?? Water trampoline is in front of the Westin Hotel that looks like a cruise ship. If you go toward the beach from the shopping district you will be at either the Westin or Sheraton... just get to the beach and you will see it out in the water. bobsfamily Posted January 9, 2009 #66 Share Posted January 9, 2009 great thanks! Do you need a wristband to use it? No... they are not part of the complex... remember that - they are independent contractors so just be aware. We used them many times while staying at the Westin but the Westin is basically not responsible for their actions. Having said all that never had a problem. june2006 Posted January 22, 2009 #71 Share Posted January 22, 2009 We have stayed in Freeport twice in an AI resort and once on a cruise stop. On the cruise we chose not to do anything and I have to say we regret that decision. I also have to disagree with Bob's statement about everything can be done at the pier/port when you get off that you can do at Port Lucaya. Very wrong information. GBI is or can be a wonderful place. About all you can do at the pier when you get off the ship is find drinks and eat, maybe a bit os shopping. If you go to Port Lucaya then you can go to the beach, you can shop at the market there, you can go to a casino, you can chose to do an excursion there. We have a favorite place to enjoy Pain Killers. Much more opinions and this way you can see the island with your drive there. Otherwise you see a nasty port area that is mainly ugly nasty cargo ships and the such. On smaller ships (which I do love) they really do not offer much on the ship during port days. You are stuck with few options beside eating, sunny and the spa specials. While I do love those and it is an excellent time to take advantage of the slower time on a ship it is just boring as crap on a small ship to stay onboard. This is my opinion and while as Bob stated what they are like...everyone is also entitled to them. About the AI in freeport ... please we are on the cruise to there and really can not find anything however you sparked my interest :D What is Pain Killers? some kind of special drink? Thanks for your response ~
