Travelalot2 Posted August 13, 2008 #1 Share Posted August 13, 2008 We will be in Dubrovnik on a cruise for the day. We had originally planned to walk the city wall ourselves, however should we hire a guide (or takes the ship's tour that includes a guide) to explain to us what we are looking at to make the most of our experience? mickfoxland Posted August 13, 2008 #2 Share Posted August 13, 2008 we didn't bother with any tours, we did it on our own and had a great time the ships shuttle drops you by the entrance to the walled city from there tou can easily get on to the walls, staircase to the left as you come through the pile gate(there is a charge 5k 50k or 500k can't remember the units anyway around $10 or £5) we printed off the walking guide from the tourist site follow the link http://www.tzdubrovnik.hr/english/what_to_see.php?id=1185&id_main=1185&box=9 we only got halfway around, not because of the time or distance, we had a beer on the walls, and then a few more at a bar and never got any further:D some pictures on the link below http://good-times.webshots.com/album/563665541ggCJsB its a great city
Captain Canuck Posted August 13, 2008 #3 Share Posted August 13, 2008 we did the town on our own...you get to walk on the walls...major scary for me as I have a huge fear of heights...walls came to about my knees in places and there were no handrails on the steps down.....that being said its gorgeous....I would only go for a tour if you want an explanation of the places history....but I find I would rather research that after I look around on my own....and I take tons of photos and video to refresh my memory.... Rare Keith1010 Posted August 13, 2008 #4 Share Posted August 13, 2008 This is a port that you can easily do on your own. Take the tour of the Walled City on your own without a guide and then plan to walk around the nearby areas afterwards. Keith
sea-explorer Posted August 13, 2008 #5 Share Posted August 13, 2008 I haven't been yet, so what do I know. However, this is certainly a port we plan to do on our own. I have the lonely planet guide, but can say there isn't really anything in there you can't find on these boards, particularly on the other Dubrovnik thread here, where croatian travelady has been very helpful, thank you. :) http://cruiseforums.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=783766 As well as the walls, you can also find a self-guided walk here. http://www.tzdubrovnik.hr/english/what_to_see.php?id=1185 There is a better map here http://www.tzdubrovnik.hr/data/1198052158_49_mala_Plan%20Grada_2008.pdf There is more to be found on the above website..found courtesy of croatian travelady in the thread given above. :)
hillslife Posted August 13, 2008 #6 Share Posted August 13, 2008 Just returned Aug 4th from this port - it is very doable on your own. Princess provided a shuttle from the port to the walled city. We went on the first shuttle to beat the crowd and heat and I would recommend this. The later it got, the more tours showed up and the heat was pretty intensive. We bought our ticket and walked the entire wall - stopping to see both of the monastaries (definitely do this - there is an extra charge to get in, but very beautiful and a great way to cool off) along the way and then toured the city after and got a gelato....don't waste your $$ on a tour for this port. I am very afraid of heights but had no problem walking the walls - it is very beautiful and there are a few places along the way to sit and have a cool beverage if you like. It is very hot, with no shade as you are walking, so definitely wear hats or take an umbrella... Enjoy...
