Whales in Halifax ?

Recommended Posts

Last year we were on a cruise from 9/13 to 9/23. We saw whales every day but we were looking for them (Spent a lot of time looking at the water, etc instead of doing the ships activities). Friends of our took the Whale watching tour in Halifax and they said it was a waste of time. The boat went very slow out of the harbor for about 45 minutes, pulled up a lobster trap and then turned around.

I am not saying that you will not see whales but at this time of year, most of the humpbacks are usually making their way south. I am sure that Minkes will still be in the area and a lot of dolphins. If you take the time and know what you are looking for, I am sure that you will be able to see whales from the ship as well.

As I mentioned, last year we saw whales every day. The first day out (I was up at day break when I saw them), there were a group of humpbacks moving south all together. After about 10 minutes of watching them, three or four of them starting breaching. Quite a sight.
