memaf Posted September 7, 2008 #1 Share Posted September 7, 2008 We have a port stop in Rome. We have been to Rome several times, and do not wish to travel there on our upcoming cruise. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do around the port? Are there any small towns of interest if we should decide to hire a cab? Thank you in advance for any suggestions. Ask4Jay Posted September 7, 2008 #2 Share Posted September 7, 2008 memaf - Been there done that, so we stay onboard, enjoying the empty ship.
digby Posted September 7, 2008 #3 Share Posted September 7, 2008 We could find nothing of interest to do close to the port, but we got off the ship and walked into town and had a very nice casual lunch along the water front.
StanandJim Posted September 7, 2008 #4 Share Posted September 7, 2008 Memaf- Some friends, on our last Med Cruise, who were in a similar situation to you, took what was called "The Appian Way" Tour. Apparently it focuses on the Appian way as it approaches Rome (however, the tour takes place entirely outside of the city). Our friends were not interested in a strenuous tour, so they bisected their day with a longish lunch in an Appian wayside restaurant, if you will. They left that in the guides hands, and were very happy with the food and the price. As can happen in Italy, the building where they ate was tremendously old and wildly charming. As it was explained to us, all of the Roman guides "do" the Appian way, but because of the plethora of historical sites in Rome, it is a tour seldom requested. Food for thought.......
