Cruise lines change course to cut fuel

Came across this while searching for news about GT. Looks like change is occuring with all cruise lines with the price of gas.

It makes sense - just wish the price of oil would come down. Just think of all the oil that the cruise industry will not be buying due to itinerary changes. You would think these oil companies would pay attention! Maybe after they stop posting $billions of profits each qtr!

Interesting article, thank you for posting. Helps explain the changes as we don't seem to get this level of detail from the cruise lines on their websites.

Yes, it does make sense I am sure most people do the same thing. On the way home from work you stop at the grocery store, and run your errands. When before gas went up you may have done it after going home, or on your off day.

Yes its not news that the cruiselines have been doing this but like you said the details were never explained. We all assumed that they were doing it to save fuel, and I've read many complaints on cruiselines changing to save fuel or saying they are blaming it on propulsion problems.

to save fuel costs maybe the ships should stay in port longer. I will be on the holiday with stops in Cozumel and Calica. why do they leave Cozumel at 6 pm to get to Calica at 7 am when you can SEE Calica with your naked eye from the dock in Cozumel? It's only a 12 mile or so trip so why does it take 13 hours? They spend the whole night sailing around Cozumel a few times wasting gas. I'd rather stay in Cozumel til midnight or later. I've been on many other shaips that sailed in circles all night because the next port was so close. It doesn't make sense.

I am sure someone will be along shortly to explain but I think it's due to some law that they must go out and circle around. I think its also becuase they can't have the casino open until they leave the dock. From what I have seen the only islands w/ overnights are Nassau/Freeport. Am I correct??

Don't the cruiselines pay port charges by the hour? If that's the case you'd have to compare the extra charges for porting against the money saved on fuel.

Also the article stated the slower they go they more fuel they save.

The oil companies do not set the price of crude oil. They have no control over the cost.

When they're in port, they can't operate the casino or the duty-free shops.

Anyway, once they get into international waters they just drift, meaning they aren't using any more fuel than they would if they were tied up at the pier.

For sure.

Most of the cruiselines are shuffling itineraries, moving ships around to different homeports, etc. to save on fuel.

I don't care..........

They could cruise out to international waters and do "Figure 8"s" for a week as far as I'm concerned.:D
