70's and 80's Music

Skywalker's will have a 70's night, but it seems they only play for a few hours. Later in the evening, they seem to resort back to the hip hop music. It's surprising that when the 70's dance music is playing, the dance floor is packed, but as soon as they start into the hip hop, the dance floor is vacant. You'd think the DJ would recognize this? We love to dance, but not to the hip hop music or rap.

This has happened on a lot of our cruises. I can understand if there are a lot of younger people, but in our experience, it's been mostly 35 and older.

I agree totally! I've never understood why they won't play the music the majority of the folks want. Princess if you're reading this one --- MORE 50's to 80's music! That's the generation that will come up to Skywalkers to dance (and drink).

That's been always one of my biggest pet peeves as we normally do the late night thing: eat late, hit casino or show and then go out to the clubs. Majority of the clubs close early and then that leaves you the one late night club. The majority of the DJ's ignore the request to play older music and cater to the minority, playing techno and the like.

It's been typically an arrogant DJ ignoring to notice that when an older style of music is being played, the floor is full and then when they switch to techno, there are 8-10 people dancing. I've sent song written song request to the DJ, spoken with the DJ requesting various music and the standard response is typically "no problem" then they totally ignore the request.

We typically ended up sitting and conversing with others but really never had a late night, "dancethon". I've had much better luck on other cruise lines and really don't understand why unless they think that if they have the 70's night or whatever from 8-10 that satisfies people but we typically eat late and normally don't hit the bars until 10 or 11 and I'm guessing we're not the only ones.

Anyway, I have noticed by bar bills to be much cheaper on these cruises for obvious reasons. I hope your experience is different but I wouldn't plan on it. That is the one of the reasons (albeit small) I now look at other lines as well when planning a cruise.

I totally agree. As I previously posted, this seems to happen on all of the Princess ships we've been on. We also requested songs to the DJ, and he would just blow it off. Not a good business practice, IMO. So, we would end up leaving. There went my drink money. :( I can't stand the hip hop, rap and techno music. Give us some good dance music, and we'll stay all night!! (and spend money on drinks)

Just so you know, the 20 somethings don’t necessarily like that music either. My DS was complaining last cruise about that very thing and the complete age demographic group they are missing. No music they liked. He's 24. My SIL said the same thing too – she’s late 40s. They either play music from the 40-50s or too "up to date" music (like rap). They really need to wake up on this one. There was a thread a while back where they were complaining they weren’t playing their type of music. I couldn't agree with that one. Music from the 40’s is 70 years old. I’m all for the oldies, but that’s a little too old and too new for me.

I had a good experience on the Crown last year regarding music requests. Since I only listen to classical music and death/black metal, none of the noise (Rap, Hip-Hop, Rock, Country, Jazz, Techno, Big Band) emitted by the powerful sound systems of the various night clubs on the Crown (and most other cruise ships) is to my liking. One day, I was talking to one of the DJs who'd turned out to be a Metal fan himself. Well, you guessed it, by the middle of the night, the intricate melodies of Metal music could be heard at one of the clubs aboard the Crown.

DH and I always go to Skywalker's for the Motown dance party that quickly turns into "Saturday Night Fever" and other disco tunes. What's up with that? Given the plethora of music that came from the Motor City, we can never figure out why it's so difficult to play Motown music for more than 25-30 minutes.

I'm almost afraid to ask what the crew might have worn to depict the '60s when DH and I were in high school  In this case, "ignorance (may be) bliss" ;)

Karen,

ITA...on our last cruise on the Golden...we went up to Skywalkers and met our table-mates there for some dancing. Our 2 friends who went with us on the cruise are not dancers and went to their cabin. However, we all were having so much fun dancing and had a hard time getting onto the dance floor at first, cause it was so packed, while the 70-80's music was playing. But half way through the 1st song...when the DJ switched to Rap ( Crap:mad: ) Music, everyone left the dance floor. By the time the 2nd Rap song was half way through....most of the folks left the lounge including us and our table-mates to head to Explorer's Lounge. There the band was playing great dance music and the party continued for awhile.

ITA...you would think if there are more of the 30+ something folks dancing the DJ would just stick with that type of music for that crowd.

  • 2 weeks later...

To the PP's, thanks for agreeing as I thought maybe it was just me. I certainly don't consider myself old but I may be kidding myself ;) . I still like to dance the night away but even my son at 26 hates techno as well so that made me feel a bit better......
