Kemah Boardwalk

Although the Boardwalk in Kemah was hit hard by Ike and won't be open for a couple of months, if Carnival continues sailing out of Bayport through the beginning of next year, the Boardwalk Inn would be a great choice of hotels (if money isn't an issue!). Once the Boardwalk is up and running again, you would have a number of choices in restaurants, shops, etc.

Yes the Boardwalk Inn is extremely nice but it and the restaurants are a wreck. It is unknown how long it will take to fix things up. The health departments have said that all things in restaurants have to be replaced if there was rising water. That includes everything in the kitchens, the sheetrock on the wall, the decor and all the fittings.

The insurance companies have already said they will not pay for rising water claims. Where will the money come from?

We are very worried about the future of small businesses after this storm.

I believe that rising water claims - which a poster correctly indicated were not going to be covered by insurance companies (of course, they may have to eat those words in light of much of the damage being due to the surge) - are covered by flood insurance which is typically held by home and business owners in this area.

Yes, there will be many options for restaurants and hotels in the Bayport terminal area, however, it will be several months before the Kemah Boardwalk is ready and completely rebuilt. Fertitta said he will rebuild but gradually and bigger and better. He said Spring Break.... we can only hope. The boardwalk and Kemah took a really hard, devastating hit as well as Seabrook.

The problem with that is that it is difficult to prove what is rising water versus storm surge. The lawsuits were plentiful after Katrina with some people waiting much more than a year for their claims to be settled. There were many here like in Galveston who did not have separate flood insurance due to their living a long way from the Gulf.
