Question: Is there anything to stop and see between Civitavecchia and Rome?

Recommended Posts

We are thinking about hiring a private driver to take us and a few friends into Rome. We have all been to Rome, so we are thinking of unusual things to do.

Does anybody know: Is there anything worthwhile to stop and see along the drive between Civitavecchia and Rome?

One idea is - I would love to stop at a little winery and taste (and probably buy) some local wines...but I have not been able to find if there are any in that region. Or maybe there's something else that's really great to stop and see along the way. An ancient site? A local craftsman making something special? A beautiful view?

Any ideas?

Ostia Antica is amazing. It was the "original" port to bring goods into Rome before the Tiber River meandered away. The ruins there are as amazing as Pompeii's. Very few tourists there. You can rent an audio guide or buy a tour book. It is very tranquil and I would recommend it to anyone.
