monakayk Posted January 8, 2009 #101 Share Posted January 8, 2009 (edited) I agree, I have done 2 solo's and would never want to share a room again. It's so nice having your own space for the entire cruise. PJ ITA...with all the post about having my own cabin. I had cruise once with a VERY close friend and we had planned to share a cabin together when we booked the cruise. Then about a month before the cruise, the rates dropped so much on cabins that we both were able to get a separate cabin each for only a bit more. So we choose to do that...mainly just to have a bathroom of our own. Our cabins were right next to each other so that was great. Well, as it turned out...my friend always turned into a 'pumpkin' and wanted to go to bed by 10:30 PM and slept so late it was lunch before I even saw her in the mornings. Not that I do not like to sleep late, cause I do....but GEZZZZZZZZZZZ every day...and even on port days, which made it very hard for me to plan to do anything at port. It really made me feel like I was cruising solo when I had invited her to come on this cruise so we could have a 'Gals only Cruise' without the DHs and enjoy each others company without the 'men-folks' coming along. And her going to bed so early was really weird because she and I do 'Gals Nights Out' and stay out till well after 2 AM! Go figure. Anyhow, after a couple of days/nights like that..I was really glad that we had our own cabins, cause I would've felt like I had to be quiet as a mouse in the AMs and PMs (if I wanted to stay out later). I did however make some really nice friends on the ship that I spent almost more time with than my friend who came along with me. So that was a plus. So from now on...when going with friends or alone....I will have a cabin all to myself for sure. Edited January 8, 2009 by monakayk

Tenngal Posted January 12, 2009 #106 Share Posted January 12, 2009 Hi, Yellowbird...I live in the eastern part of TN. Love it here! All-- I just confirmed the trip to Greece! I'm still stunned. Now I have to figure out how to do this as frugally as possible, but still get the best experience. Honestly, for a 12-day cruise among the Greek isles and Turkey, this was too good of a deal to pass up.
jp2001 Posted January 13, 2009 #107 Share Posted January 13, 2009 ... Now I have to figure out how to do this as frugally as possible, but still get the best experience. ... My 2 solo cruises were also good deals too good to pass up but were not planned in my budget. It is possible to cruise frugally but having a great experience. Here are some tips: - Research your ports of call a lot (CC board, tourism dept. of these places, etc.). I'm sure some of the ports are nice to visit even without an "excursion". You can save a lot this way. - I don't drink very much on a cruise, for me, it's not worth all the money. But I let you judge. - Avoid the casino or, if it's really, really important for you, limit your number of visits and put a limit on how much you want to spend and don't go over this amount. - Join the free activities and only a few of the for-a-fee ones. I prefer to hit the gym or take a free stretch lesson than pay 10$ for a yoga or pilates session. - Refrain yourself from purchasing at the art auctions (this is more a note for myself, half of my QM2 onboard account was for art purchase and shipping... :( but it's OK, I'm happy with my purchases) but the art auctions are a good way to enjoy a glass of free bubbly while learning a bit about art. - I often bring my own Cafein free, Diet Pepsi so I don't have to buy Diet coke when I am in my cabin or on deck. If I'm in a bar or in a restaurant, I do pay for pop if I want some though.
Tenngal Posted January 13, 2009 #108 Share Posted January 13, 2009 (edited) Bonjour, JP2001! Thank you for you thoughtful suggestions. I will be researching the ports of call extensively. When I did the cruise to South America, I did none of the ship's excursions. All were independently arranged, for a far less cost and, I think, a better experience. In Canada, I ended up renting a car at two of the ports, and, in less time, was able to do the same activities that would have taken up two or three of the ship's excursions in a day. I'm already finding out that at least several ports of call on this upcoming cruise have readily-available tours and/or drivers. This cruise is very port-intensive, so I'll likely not be doing many on-board activities. I'll be too tuckered out! I am an expert at traveling on a shoestring, but I don't intend to miss out on anything important to see during this cruise. I'll literally be travelling in the cradle of our civilization. I won't let the opportunity to experience this significant area as it should be done. Ok, this thread is for deals for solo-cruisers--let's get back to those. Liv4cruzin Posted January 18, 2009 #117 Share Posted January 18, 2009 Has anyone ever cruised "solo" on Oceania? 125% rates are great – I would love to try them, especially with the free air!! Tom Yes, I sailed solo on the Regatta a few times (in prior years when you had to pay 200%). I cruise alone more than half the time. Some might consider open seating a blessing & some, a curse. There are some 2 tops where you can dine alone & then you could join a large table. If you make friends easily,, you might find a group that you like & agree to meet at the dining room at a specific time & dine together. I, personally, enjoyed the alternative of dining at Tapas on the Terrace in the evenings. I found the selections on the buffet quite pleasing; especially the "create your own" pasta station & carving station. I enjoyed this cruise experience as much or better as the majority of my others. MrWayyne Posted January 18, 2009 #118 Share Posted January 18, 2009 :)Kind of excited about the posts I am reading about this cruise. Single, gay, nice guy. New to this and would like to make sure I go about it correctly. How do I go about booking this and asking all the right questions. Upgrades etc. Very much would enjoy having my own room and not necessarily an interior room. Anxious to hear what all of you have to say. I'm kind of a moderate and not really into an "all gay" cruise. I mingle well with people of all walks of life. Very genuine, just want to kick back and enjoy. Thanks for all you have to offer.:p
Tenngal Posted January 18, 2009 #119 Share Posted January 18, 2009 Yellowbird: U of TN is my undergrad alma mater. Go Vols! I live just outside of Knoxville. Iamirish: I'm going on Oceania in September--first time with O. I found it cost me a lot less to book without the "free" air! You can do a search on this forum to see other solo-cruisers' opinions of O. MrWayyne: You can go to any online travel site (like those on this web site) or to an in-person travel agent to book with O. Except for my first-ever cruise, I've always booked balcony rooms. For this one, though, because of the high cost, I've booked interior. I figure if I get to feeling too claustrophobic, I'll just sleep outside in a deck chair!:D

Love2Cruise4Less Posted January 22, 2009 #122 Share Posted January 22, 2009 OK, so this isn't exactly a single's special but since this is my favorite thread on the boards and the fares are attractive I'll post it here. Surfing around (wasting time) I found these on the NCL website: 4/17/09 Jewel 11 day Transatlantic (Miami - London) from $399 in / 849 balcony 4/19/09 Spirit 12 day "Caribbean Escape" (New Orleans - Boston) from $599 in / 1199 balcony. ~~~~~~ Come on y'all. Wake this thread and pony up some deals. (I'm still looking for/dreaming of my 10+ day, balcony, single's priced cruise for under $1000!!)

You have to have patience for some of the 10-14 day cruises to come down. Sometimes they never do. Last year I waited until about a month before the repositioning cruise NYC-New Orleans and got a balcony for under 600. Right now, it is way too prohibitive to even contemplate going again. If the deals are out there, I'm not finding them, although the two you found are really not so bad. I love London!
Liz Posted January 23, 2009 #124 Share Posted January 23, 2009 I booked Sapphire Princess 5/16, northbound, for $675 including taxes & fees for an inside cabin. Let the planning begin! Princess had some good rates for other AK tours; in fact, I thought there might be something wrong with their computer, so I went ahead and locked-in the rate!
