Difference on Petal vs solid lens hood??

Does the shape of the lens hood make a difference?? I have a solid circle (don't know the actual name) one but also saw the petal shaped ones out there. Does it make a difference?

Not really. The petal hood makes it easier to attach filters or adjust a polarizer and it may reduce vignetting (blocking the corners) with a wide angle lens. If you have a lens that came with a solid hood, it shouldn't make a difference.
