momofmeg Posted October 7, 2008 #1 Share Posted October 7, 2008 Tell me about this ship. Does it have an atruim or centrum? and does it get crowded? I hate crowds-but we booked a balcony-so if the crowds are too much for me- I will simply relax on my balcony more often.
MrsLeo Posted October 7, 2008 #2 Share Posted October 7, 2008 My impression of the Pearl was that for a pretty large ship I never felt like it was crowded. It was very spacious. It does have a centrum/atrium and I never saw large crowds gathering there except for the day you leave.

pj-n-bob Posted October 7, 2008 #4 Share Posted October 7, 2008 A centrum. I don't remember it being crowded, except when they were holding presentations on the big screen. Also, I think twice the shops had "bargain" tables set up selling souveniers.

We are on the ship Thanksgiving week as our daughter works in the school system and we wanted to take a cruise together. Being that week especially, I fear it could be crowded, but I realize I have to give up something in order to go with her. That week would be crowded on most any ship,I am afraid. Kathylovescruises Posted October 7, 2008 #6 Share Posted October 7, 2008 Pearl didn't feel crowded at New Years- but the Centrum is NOT like those on RCI or Disney or CArnival- not as open or tall, none of the beautiful brass elevator type stuff. But the change is nice- at first we thought we would miss it ( the kids were a little sad but got over that in 6 seconds) Our last cruise on the ship was full but there are plenty of places to escape and relax- including the balcony. We never felt crowded, even in the casino or when scouring the ship for New Years hats! There are usually a lot of vendors and things going on in this area- makes it kinda fun! Have a great Thanksgiving- can't wait til my next Pearl jaunt!

I am very happy it is a centrum and to me that is "classier" whereas the atruim is all about being "showy".
DAGVBSB Posted October 7, 2008 #10 Share Posted October 7, 2008 I have never felt crowded on any NCL ship. The only ship that I have ever felt crowded on was the RCCL "Explorer of the Seas." The ship is laid out very poorly and people crowd and pushed all over the place. (especially the TWO elevator banks on the Explorer. The Peal has 3 Elevator banks... forward, mid and aft.) My parents were on the Pearl and said it was wonderful, even better than the Dawn.

Dawn, I was on Mariner of the Seas, a voyager class ship and I felt the same exact way, I was on a super crowded cruise of 3700 people, supposably the max was 3300. I learned later though the max # is based on 2 PAX per stateroom, obviously my cruise had many with 4 to a stateroom.

Vol fan Posted October 7, 2008 #14 Share Posted October 7, 2008 It may vary from ship to ship but we were on a cruise the first week of December a couple of years ago and they started stringing garland during the week. Every day, there were a few more holiday decorations. There was one Christmas tree at the end of the week. There were no holiday decorations at all when we boarded. Last year we were on the Star the week after Thanksgiving (in fact boarded her the Saturday after Thanksgiving) and thats whey they started putting up the Christmas stuff on her. momofmeg Posted October 8, 2008 Author #19 Share Posted October 8, 2008 Mariner and Explorer are sister ships. I know, that is why I replied to her that I felt the same way. I could see that she "got" my concern.

caspmorn Posted October 8, 2008 #21 Share Posted October 8, 2008 Pearl has a two-level atrium connecting decks 7 & 8. Above the atrium are Mambos and Blue Lagoon Restaurants. There is a two-story screen, and the only time people congregated was for football playoff games (January 2008). The pictures provided above give a good feel for the atrium. When I was on the ship, there were over 2700 passengers. It never seemed crowded.

momofmeg Posted October 8, 2008 Author #23 Share Posted October 8, 2008 Sorry that I got my terms confused. That's okay I only have learned because of my fear of heights! I stay away from Carnival and RCI both because of those atruims! (other reasons also-but that is the biggest) and after watching Poseidon a few years ago-that sure did not help! I still wonder if that was filmed, the atruim area, pre accident, in a voyager class ship-it reminded me big time of the Mariner of the Seas atruim. Kathylovescruises Posted October 8, 2008 #25 Share Posted October 8, 2008 I enjoyed your pics too. You inspired me to go to youtube and watch some NCL Pearl videos. That is a GREAT idea- we are going on 2 other cruises next year - ships we haven't been on. The kids will LOVE it! love your hubbie's web site- i am trying to stay away from the political blogs today and I am stuck on Cruise Critic! Too addicting...
