Going to St. John from Crown Bay

We will be on the Crown Princess in November. DH and I have been to St. Thomas before so we would like to try and go to St. John. Our ship will be in port from 7-4 that day. Could someone tell me the best way to do this? I have seen directions from Havensight but don't think we will be docking there.

There are two ferry departure points: Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook. Check the schedules and see which works for you and which you want to take. Try http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=virgin+islands+ferry+schedule&fr=yfp-t-501&toggle=1&cop=mss&ei=UTF-8. You'd need to get from Crown Bay to the ferry dock. Ferry to St. John; both the CA and RH ferry arrrive at the Cruz Bay ferry dock. At the end of the Cruz Bay ferry dock there is a taxi stand and drivers are waiting there to take you to the beach or on a tour. If you wanted to rent a car you can walk to a few of the car rental office in Cruz Bay and do that. If you want to hike to a beach from town, there is the Lind Point Trail that starts right behind the NP Visitor Center, which is a sort walk from the ferry dock. Make sure you note the number of ships in port, more ships mean more traffic, when figuring out which ferry you need to take back to get back to your ship on time.

Gator22, Just a headsup. If you are using that ferry schedule you posted to do your planning, note that it is dated. Rates have gone up and there are a couple changes in the schedule also.

We were just there in August...moved from Western Caribbean to St Martin/St Thomas due to hurricane. We ported at Crown Bay and took the ferry from town to Tortola. We took a taxi to the ferry in town...about 5-7 minute ride and $4pp I think...the driver made a stop at the across from the ferry port for us to get off. From there, you can take the ferry to St John. It's a little higher than from Red Hook, but you would pay much more to Red Hook by taxi. Needless to say you will be on the ferry a little longer than you would be if you left Red Hook, but it's a nice ride. When we got back to St Thomas, we walked from the ferry back to Crown Bay...maybe 20-25 minutes.

Quick note.... Nerak mentioned taking a ferry to Tortola from town, the ferry to St. John from town does not leave from the Tortola ferry terminal in town. It leaves from an area on the waterfront a bit further east. It will still be $4 for the taxi to the St. John Ferry in town.

 

The taxi + ferry is a couple dollars different... $4 for taxi + $11.10 ferry one way for Charlotte Amalie route. And $11 for taxi + $6.10 ferry one way for Red Hook route. And timewise it is pretty close also; about 8 minutes from Crown Bay to St. John ferry in town + 40 minutes for ferry. About 30-35 minutes for taxi to Red Hook and 15 minutes for ferry ride. The driving times will take longer if there is a traffic, more ships means more traffic. Crown Bay to St. John Ferry in town is about 1.7 miles.
